================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Description:
The project will develop Natural Language Processing components for a Pashto-speaking virtual translator character, that is an animated character who can translate between English and Pashto and converse in Pashto with other virtual characters. Components to be developed may include speech recognition, morphological analysis, syntactic/semantic parsing, utterance classification, and other technologies as needed. Most of the work will build on existing components, enhancing and adapting them for the Pashto language and the specific conversation topics required for the characters. The work will involve the creation of a Pashto corpus for testing and development. Given the fragmentary nature of existing resources, the project may also include some linguistic research on the Pashto language itself.
