Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2012

Meeting Description:

The Sociolinguistics Symposium 19 will be hosted by Freie Universität Berlin. The main theme will be 'Language and the City'.

Attractive and terrifying, modern cities and megacities structure our lives and communication more than ever. More than 50% of the world's population live in big cities. If urban conglomerations are places where people from other places gather, they form the communicative conditions in many ways: Migration leads to multilingualism, social diversity leads to complex indexical fields.

Call for Papers:

The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the Sociolinguistics Symposium 19 (Berlin, August 2012) is approaching. If you want to present a paper or a poster at this major sociolinguistic event, you will have to submit an abstract within the next ten days. The deadline is January 31, 2012.

Before submitting, please have a look at the 73 thematic sessions. You will find the complete list and abstracts at:

If you are interested in one of the proposed themes, you should consider submitting for that specific session. (In case you worry: Positively reviewed papers that cannot be accepted for a thematic session for organizational reasons will be shifted to the general session automatically.)

We hope to receive your abstract soon and to see you in Berlin in August!
