Meeting Description:

>From Realis to Irrealis in Languages, Discourse and Representations

With language, we can connect a real state of affairs to substitutes for this reality, according to A. Culioli (Variations sur la linguistique, 2002, p. 51). If realis consists in representing what is actually the case, and irrealis in the broadest possible sense consists in representing what is not the case, one can wonder how they are constructed both in relation to each other and in opposition to each other. The Limoges conference aims to explore how our representations of reality and their otherness either cohabit or are confronted within the same utterance.

Call for Papers:

Here is a list of fields of interest which can be investigated, in the continuation of the Cerlico26 Bordeaux conference on this theme:

1) The metalinguistic concepts conveyed since Antiquity could be questioned through empirical data.

2) As realis and irrealis are just categories of meaning and since there does not seem to be any marker whose sole purpose is to refer to them, we are entitled to question how markers help refer to them within the same contexts from one language to another. Typological and crosslinguistic studies will therefore be welcome. The notions of reality and possibility, the various ways of constructing their imagined otherness, possible worlds and mental spaces could be examined from semantic or pragmatic perspectives.

3) Among other topics, studies could focus on tenses and moods, subordination, coordination and paratax, verbal complementation but also lexicon, connectives and introductory forms of speech, especially in interlocutory contexts, in which the representations of two speakers and their expression can be compared, both in written and oral data.

All theoretical frameworks will be accepted but will have to be specified.

Presentations of papers will be allocated 25 minutes plus 15 minutes for questions. Posters will also be presented. Articles will be published in 2014 in Travaux Linguistiques du CerLiCO n°27 by Rennes University Press.

Submission:

Deadline for abstract submission: September 30, 2012

Authors of papers and posters should submit anonymous abstracts, should give a clear indication as to their link with the topic of the conference, the corpus under investigation and a short list of references. They should be no longer than one page (500 words/3000 signs). Authors will specify if they intend to present their work as a paper or poster. Abstracts will be accessible on the CerLiCO website:

http://www.mshs.univ-poitiers.fr/cerlico/cerlico.htm

Each proposal will be examined anonymously by two members of the scientific committee. They should be sent in the form of anonymous attachments (in Word .doc or PDF format) to:
