Since 1998 the Department of English in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana has been hosting a biennial conference to discuss issues concerning English language and literature in Africa. The 2013 conference, Language, Literature, Theatre and Indigenous Knowledge will provide a platform for researchers, academics, educators, language planners, literary scholars, theatre practitioners and other professionals in Africa and elsewhere to discuss the role and importance of indigenous knowledge in language, literature and theatre. The conference will also provide a forum for the description and analysis of various indigenous languages.

Registration Fees:

Registration fees for the conference are as follows:

Students: BWP 300.00 (P300.00). Proof of student status will be required. An ID will be most appropriate.
Other participants: BWP 1300.00 (P1300.00).

Registration and payment of registration fees will be done on-site on Wednesday, 5 June 2013.

Will be provided in due course

Food:

The Conference will provide refreshments and lunch from 5 June 2013 to the 7 June 2013. There will be a conference dinner on the night of 6 June 2013. 

Visas:

Please find out as soon as possible whether you need a visa to come to Botswana. Visas take a number of weeks/months to process and must therefore be attended to well in time. Visa fees differ for different countries. Participants must ensure that their passports are original and are valid for at least a period of six months. Only participants whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at our conference will be assisted with visa issues if necessary. However, it is largely the responsibility of the participants to secure visas to come to Botswana for the conference.

Temperatures in Gaborone can go as low as zero degrees Celsius in the mornings and evenings in winter and so it is advisable to bring warm clothes. During the day however, temperatures are usually around twenty degrees Celsius.

Cultural and historical heritage sites in Tlokweng and Mochudi villages

- Onomastic practices as archives of culture
- Language, gender and conflict management in the family
- Discourses of traditional marriage counselling 
- Language, literature and traditional concepts of democracy
- The traditional discourse of 'botho' (humanness) and the challenges of the 21st century
- Traditional children's games, song & play as indigenous knowledge
- Borders between ritual performance and theatre 
- Ethical issues in researching indigenous performance and integrating it into urban 'art theatre'
- Appropriation of indigenous performance for political ends
- Semiotics of African traditional performance and ceremony
- Aesthetics in African theatre and drama
- Description/analysis of indigenous & other languages
- Language policies and indigenous languages
- Papers that do not necessarily speak directly to the theme of the conference are also welcome.

Submission of Abstracts:

Abstracts of not more than 250 words on any of the above themes and sub-themes should be submitted via email to: rapooconnie at gmail.com and elleces at mopipi.ub.bw. Abstracts must be Microsoft Word documents and must be submitted electronically only. In case Abstracts make use of any specialized characters or diacritics, such abstracts should be sent in PDF format. The deadline for submission is 31 October 2012. 

Abstracts should include:

- Title of paper
- Conference theme and sub-theme addressed
- Name(s) and academic title(s) of author(s)
- Academic or professional affiliation
- Email address
- Number of words in the abstract 

Abstracts are considered and responded to as they are submitted.

Funding:

The Department of English at the University of Botswana does not have funds to assist potential participants to attend the conference. In the event that their abstracts are accepted for presentation at the conference, participants are advised to seek financial assistance from their institutions or other organizations to attend the conference. 

Publication of Proceedings:

The conference will be followed by a call for papers to be considered for publication as is our practice. These papers will undergo a rigorous review process.
