Meeting Description:

The American Name Society (ANS) was founded in 1951 to promote onomastics, the study of names and naming practices in the United States and abroad. The organization publishes a peer-reviewed journal, NAMES, and hosts an annual conference in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America. We welcome research on all scholarly topics relevant to names and naming research.

Call for Papers:

The American Name Society (ANS), a professional organization devoted to the study of names and their role in society, invites proposals for papers for its annual meeting to be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, January 3-6, 2013. Papers in any area of onomastics are appropriate. Example topic areas include the following: the linguistic characteristics of names; the use of names in literature (e.g. character names, titles, author names and pseudonyms); sociolinguistic and/or cultural aspects of names and naming; the history of names and naming practices, etc. The ANS not only welcomes papers from senior researchers, but also graduate students interested in onomastic research. Towards that end, the ANS gives each year an Emerging Scholar award to recognize the best conference paper given by a graduate student or new scholar.

Send proposals by email attachment (preferably in a .doc or .docx format) to Donna Lillian at ANS1stVP at yahoo.com, with 'ANS Proposal' in the subject line. Proposals should include a précis of up to 500 words, as well as a 100-word abstract for publication in the meeting programs. The deadline for receipt of proposals is July 1, 2012, but presenters who may need additional time to secure international payments and travel visas to the United States are urged to submit their proposal as soon as possible. All proposals will be evaluated anonymously, and their authors will be notified on or before August 25, 2012.

Presenters must:

- be current members of ANS in order to present;
- pay the LSA conference registration fee; and
- pay a small registration fee to ANS (to cover expenses not covered by LSA).
