Workshop at the 35th Annual Conference of the German Linguistic Society (DGfS 2013)

Research on the internal structure of nominal expressions (including prepositional phrases) in a variety of languages has revealed that there are parallels between clausal and nominal complexity and that the nominal domain also encodes information-structural properties such as focus and topic (Giusti 1996). Recently, research on NP syntax and information structure has received some attention again (Aboh et al. 2010), especially by investigating non-standardized variants (dialects and former diachronic stages) that may invoke alternative realizations which are not so easily observable in the standardized written languages. Our workshop addresses the question of how far the parallels between the nominal and clausal domain in the context of information structure can be pushed and which restrictions can be observed with respect to the availability of such alternative realizations. We aim at bringing together researchers (working in a functional or formal framework) that deal with the above mentioned aspects, preferably from (but not limited to) a microvariational perspective.

Call for Papers:

Possible topics are:

- The syntax of complex wh-phrases ('which'-phrases, 'was-für' split, etc.)
- Split topicalization and its DP-internal preconditions
- Determiner doubling in Upper German dialects such as Bavarian 'a so a Glück'
- Spurious -'n' in Dutch
- The internal structure of locational and directional PPs
- The different order (and reordering possibilities) of adnominal adjectives
- The alternative realization in possessor constructions (as in the German possessor doubling construction alternating with a dependent 'of'-phrase: 'dem Vater sein Hut' vs. 'der Hut vom Vater')
- Synthetic realization (compounding) vs. analytic realization of modification such as German 'Haustür' vs. 'Tür vom Haus'
- Prepositional adverbs (doubling; P-stranding, fronting) such as German 'da hält er nichts (da)von'/'(da) davon hält er nichts'

Submission Details:

We invite submissions of anonymous abstracts for 30 or 60 minute talks including discussion. Submissions should not exceed one page, 12pt. single spaced, with an optional additional page for examples and references. Either PDF or Word format is accepted.
