Meeting Description:

>From October 4-6 2012 the research group 'Spatial Relations Contrastive German / Spanish' (SPATREL) of the Department of English and German Philology (University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain) will hold an international symposium on spatial relations in German, as well as contrastive German/English or German/Spanish.

Studies of the lexical semantics of spatial terms across languages have provided evidence of considerable variation in the details of how spatial relations are linguistically categorized even in typological similar languages. The main focus of this symposium is to explore how German encodes spatial concepts such as motion, location and orientation and to examine the cross-linguistic similarities and differences between German and English or Spanish.

2nd Call for Papers:

Extended deadline: June 28, 2012

This symposium aims to bring together researchers working on different linguistic and methodological approaches and to provide for discussions on how German, English and Spanish organize linguistically space. We welcome abstracts presenting theoretical or practical studies on this subject.

Please submit abstracts of 200-300 words (excluding references) for a thirty-minute talk (twenty minutes for the presentation, plus ten minutes for discussion).

The languages of the symposium are English, German and Spanish.

Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference website. All papers reviewed and accepted by the scientific committee will be published in the symposium proceedings volume.
