Linguistic Field(s): Morphology; Syntax

Meeting Description:

The process of changing a word's syntactic category without any change of form (as in English arrest V and arrest N), the changing of a word's syntactic category through suffixes (as in English perform / performance) and the existence of the same word in different contexts, with mixed properties (as the English verbal gerundive versus the nominal gerundive, John's performing the sonata versus John's performing of the sonata), although being different phenomena, are intrinsically related and pose interesting problems to the architecture of grammar and, in particular, to the interface between Lexicon, Morphology and Syntax; in the last decades we have been confronted with big discussions about these issues, oscillating from strong lexicalist positions (Hale & Keyser 1993, 2002) to strong syntactic approaches (Halle & Marantz 1993, Marantz 2001).

The Centre of Linguistics of the University of Porto (CLUP), Portugal, will organize, on 2-3 November 2012, an international workshop on conversion, reanalysis and mixed categories, aiming to bring together Portuguese and foreign researchers of different theoretical frameworks that have been working on these matters, as well as some young researchers who are doing research on Romance languages, although not ignoring Germanic Languages.

Fees:
Free for CLUP members and FLUP teachers and students.
40 euros for professionals outside CLUP and FLUP.
