Meeting Description:

The 4th Biennial Meeting of the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society (SIS-EES) / 6th International Conference of Hispanic Linguistics will take place at Birkbeck, University of London from 3-5 July 2013. 

The theme of the conference is 'Language and Identity in the Spanish-speaking World' and our confirmed plenary speakers are:

Prof. Anna De Fina (Georgetown University, USA)
Prof. Clare Mar-Molinero (University of Southampton, UK) 
Dr Rosina Márquez Reiter (University of Surrey, UK) 
Dr Francisco Yus Ramos (Universidad de Alicante, Spain)

There will also be a workshop with Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele (Birkbeck, University of London)on Shifting language choices and hybrid identities of multilinguals.

Call for Papers:

We welcome abstracts for papers exploring any aspects of the way in which Spanish is used in society. Of particular interest are theoretical, methodological and empirical papers on the interaction between language and identity from a sociolinguistic, pragmatic or discourse analytic perspective (e.g. how identity is constructed and performed or represented through language in different types of mediated and non-mediated contexts and interactions). Presentations will consist of 30-minute research papers inclusive of 10 minutes for discussion and questions.

Languages of the conference: Spanish and English

Abstract Submission Information:

- Abstracts must be submitted via the Linguist List Easy Abstracts facility at the conference address: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/SIS2013.
- Abstract submission dates: 1 October 2012 to 20 January 2013. 
- Contents: Abstracts should contain the title of the paper and a description of the proposed talk of 300 words (max.) excluding references. For empirical studies, the abstract should include aims, methodology and main findings of the study upon which it is based, as well as a list of bibliographical references (APA style). 4-5 key words that describe the research should also be included.
- Abstracts will be subjected to blind review so authors' names should not appear in the text of the abstract.
