Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce that the sixth biennial conference Interpreting for Relevance: Discourse and Translation will be held on 25-26 September 2012 in Warsaw.

The conference aims to provide a venue for linguists and other scholars to explore phenomena of human communication and cognition from the perspective of relevance theory as well as related and competing approaches. We would also like to encourage those interested in translation studies and literary analysis to test and evaluate the efficiency of relevance theory with regard to those fields of studies.

Deirdre Wilson (University College London, UK and CSMN, University of Oslo, Norway)
Robyn Carston (University College London, UK and CSMN, University of Oslo, Norway)
Vladimir Žegarac (University of Bedfordshire, UK)
Nicholas Allott (CSMN, University of Oslo, Norway) 

Call for Papers:

Papers are invited that range from purely theoretical linguistic and/or pragmatic studies to empirical applications in language, translation and literature.

 We welcome submissions in the following areas:

- State-of-the-art developments, modifications and critiques of relevance theory
- Practical applications of relevance theory (e.g. language learning/teaching, translation studies, literary theory)
- Mental representations, concepts, the architecture of the mind
- Meaning and communication
- Ways of interpreting various types of discourse
- Social aspects of communication and language use
- Experimental studies verifying or falsifying predictions derived from relevance theory

Paper presentations will be organised around major topics, depending on the contents of the submissions. The format is 20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes question time. Proposals for workshops, panel discussions and other sessions are welcome. Plenaries will take from 60 minutes including discussion.

Abstracts:

Abstracts, consisting of up to 700 words (together with examples and references) should be sent to ifr at uw.edu.pl.
