Multimodality in Interpersonal Communication: Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Explanation

Language of the Session: English

An increasing number of studies in human communication adopts a holistic approach and tends to encompass more than only the spoken component of interaction. Hand gestures, head and body movements, gaze direction as well as other components of the visible behaviour may also significantly contribute to the semantic content and pragmatic functions of messages as well as to the dynamics of communication.

There is strong evidence that gesture and speech are linked due to their common intentional source. Speech and gestures occur in synchrony which can be observed both on the level of the 'physical realisation' (e.g., articulatory gestures and hand gestures) but also on the level of message structure and meaning. The presence of gesture and facial expression in multimodal utterances produced in absence of their potential addressees or out of reach of their vision suggests the permanent nature of the relation between gesture and speech and compulse to treat them jointly in the linguistic studies of communication. Nevertheless, although gestures and speech share many properties and closely co-exist, they remain different and these differences should be studied with special attention and care.

The interest in gesture as a component of utterance can be dated back to ancient rhetorics but its systematic study in the context of communication has only emerged in recent decades. Therefore, very fundamental issues related to data collection, processing and annotation are still debated along with various modelling attempts and emerging theoretical explanations. This makes the field especially interesting and rapidly growing. Its contribution to communication studies is even now obvious and significant.

The following key issues are expected to be touched upon in the session:

- Empirical data in the study of multimodal communication: Collection, processing, annotation and analysis
- Gesture and speech as means of conveying meaning in interpersonal communication
- Interactive aspects of gesture and speech
- Multimodality in communication: Towards a coherent theoretical framework

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a
simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to
LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
