Meeting Description:

As the O&O (Outsourcing and Offshoring) industry continues to grow in both volume and range of services, the need for good English language communication skills remains vital to its continued success. Good communication skills have become essential for this industry and are regularly subjected to a range of 'quality assurance' measures. The conference focuses on the requirements of quality and language as global resource in the O&O industry. 

There is enormous potential for the application of research findings in this area to impact business performance and the market share for the O&O industry. Some of the applied linguistic research is currently impacting:

- Recruitment assessment of language skills
- Training (both near hire and new hire)
- Coaching and performance management
- Quality assessment and agent learning pathways

Talking Across the World 2012 will be a forum for academia and industry to exchange ideas, share best practices and research around the key concerns in English communication in the O&O industry.

TAW5 is jointly organized by the Department of English, Polytechnic University of Hong Kong, the Department of English, City University of Hong Kong and the Department of English and Applied Linguistics, College of Education, De La Salle University.

Call for Papers:

We are keen to invite industry personnel, academics and researchers who share concerns about English communication capacity for this industry, to submit a paper for this conference. Specifically, the conference will address the issues of:

1. Assessing language for work impact - papers related to language and communication assessment practices in the O&O industry e.g. examples of how homegrown assessment works in house and for what purposes; the role of commercially available business English testing instruments.

2. Curriculum innovation in O&O English communication training - papers related to: Research: how language research can inform the development of training materials. Curriculum: the syllabus design process from planning to implementation to evaluation. Train the Trainer: development of teacher education and trainer/coaching support programmes.

4. Quality, evaluation and its role in O&O - papers related to: quality assurance (QA) measures used within the industry; and whether QA measures test the specific linguistic features they are designed to assess.

5. Intercultural communication and its place in training - papers related to: Intercultural awareness and its impact on the success of outsourced O&O work; critiques of existing programmes in intercultural training; and ideas for more effective training and awareness raising for culture.

6. Discourse analysis and linguistic research - papers related to: Linguistic analyses of different aspects of O&O interaction and transaction, both spoken and written e.g. transcribed call centre exchange and email/chat support.

7. Academic and workplace partnering - papers related to: The interrelationship between education, both the tertiary and secondary sector, and the workplace in the provision of employment related skills with specific reference to language and communication skills.

8. English as a lingua franca in the O&O industry - papers related to: the role of English and the development of global adaptability in the transnational offshore and outsourced industry.

The deadline for submission is 20 May 2012. 

Early Bird registration fee should be paid by 20 May 2012. All registration fees must be paid by 10 June 2012. Should payment not be received, your name will be removed from the programme.
