Meeting Description:

'The Social Side of Speech' is a 1-day conference focusing on leading-edge international and national research in experimental sociophonetics. This research topic addresses empirical studies of how people speak the same language, yet do so differently depending on their social and geographical origins. Those speech differences are, in turn, demonstrably apparent to native listeners of the language.

The conference is sponsored by the MARCS Institute and the School of Humanities and Communication Arts, UWS and will take place at UWS Bankstown campus on Wednesday, 11 April 2012. We have an exciting line-up of invited talks by international experts, and talks about ongoing socio-phonetics research at MARCS Institute.

Invited Speakers:

Gerard Docherty, Professor, Phonetics and Dean of Research, Innovation & Business Development, Newcastle University, UK
'Variation and speech processing: The challenge of sociophonetic variations'

Jennifer Hay, Professor, Linguistics and Director of NZ Institute for Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZIL BB), University of Canterbury, NZ
'The social side of words'

Catherine Best, Professor and Chair in Psycholinguistic Research, MARCS Institute, University of Western Sydney
'Baby steps toward the social side: Toddlers' recognition of words in other regional accents'

Brownwen Evans, Lecturer, Phonetics, University College London, UK
'Perceptual adaptation to accented speech: The long and short of it'

Jason Shaw, Lecturer, Linguistics and Researcher at MARCS Institute, University of Western Sydney
'A computational model of vowel dynamics: Predictions for perception of structured variation'

Paul Foulkes, Professor, Linguistics, University of York, UK
