Theme: Evaluation of NLP-based Systems for L2 Learning and Assessment

The 2012 TSLL Conference will provide a forum for discussion of research investigating how natural language processing-based systems can be evaluated to inform their use in the teaching, learning and assessment of writing.

Jill Burstein, Educational Testing Service
Paige Ware, Southern Methodist University 

Call for Papers:

The following topics are of particular interest:

- Research investigating the effectiveness of NLP-based analysis of learners' written language as part of classroom instruction
- The study of individual writers' use of NLP-based analysis of learners' written language in and out of class
- Research on the role of teachers' knowledge and beliefs about NLP-based systems in their use of such systems
- Research on the impact of different contexts, institutional and educational policies, pedagogical practices, learner needs/styles/strategies, user literacies, etc. on the effectiveness of NLP-based systems
- Cross-disciplinary perspectives on critical research issues in the development and use NLP-based systems for writing instruction and assessment
- Issues concerning the design of research on learners' use of NLP-based systems for improving writing

Types of Presentations:

1. Papers: Theory-oriented presentations or reports on completed research related to the theme of the conference.  The presenter will have 20 minutes to present, followed by 10 minutes for questions and comments.

2. Posters: Presentations of work in progress and research at the planning phase. All poster presenters will give a 5-minute introduction of their study to the whole audience, and will then host their posters for the rest of the session.  

Submission Deadline:

In order to be considered, proposals must be received via email by Friday, April 27, 2012. Those submitting proposals will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance by Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

Instructions for Submitting an Abstract:

All submissions must be sent electronically to the conference committee at TSLL12 at iastate.edu. Attach a MS Word file to an email with the subject header 'TSLL Submission - 'your name'.'

Page 1: Abstract of proposed contribution with title.  Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words.

Page 2: Please include the following:

a) Title of presentation (10 words maximum)
b) Type of presentation (paper/poster)
c) Name(s) of the author(s) in the order you would like them to appear in the program, their institutional affiliation, including the city and state of the institution (Underline the name of the author who will be the correspondent)
d) AV equipment required (projector will provided)
