Meeting Description:

The goal of this conference is to address the complex problems of the so-called Knaanic language. We would like to focus on the main areas of the Judeo-Slavic research, the problem of the Knaanic glosses and the reference of the term, the cultural, historical and especially linguistic aspects of Judeo-Slavistics and the relation of the Knaanic glosses to the individual Slavic languages. Problems of origination of Yiddish and early Slavic layers in it shall also be addressed. The research in these fields continues to attract specialists in Slavic languages, Hebrew and Yiddish studies as well as historians. We plan to publish the proceedings of the conference in 2013, the requirements for the printed version of the contributions will be specified later. 

The topics of interest that the conference would like to cover include:

- The problem of the term Knaanic language
- The cultural and linguistic development of Czech Jews prior to 1400
- Orthography, phonology and grammar of the Knaanic language
- The relationship between the Knaanic glosses and Judeo-French glosses
- Roman Jakobson's research into the linguistic problems of Knaanic language
- The problem of early Slavic layer in Yiddish
- The current state, trends and future prospects of the research
- The problem of the relationship between the Knaanic glosses and early Slavic languages documents
- Expansion of the Czech-Jewish language to Poland
- The role of vernaculars like Old French, Slavic, German and other languages in Hebrew medieval writings

The conference held on October 25-26, 2012, at Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts.

Conference Fees:

By 31 August 2012: EUR 50
By 30 September 2012: EUR 60
After 30 September 2012: EUR 70

Payment options will be specified after 10 June 2012 on the conference website. The conference fee covers expanses for a conference bag, conference materials, a book of abstracts, refreshments during breaks and conference dinner. A visit to the National Library of the Czech Republic to view the Cheb (Eger) Bible is also planned during the conference.

Abstract Submission: 

Abstracts for conference papers (20 min. talk and 10 min. discussion) should not exceed 500 words in English, German or Czech, including references. The abstracts are to be sent to robert.dittmann at ff.cuni.cz  by 15 May 2012. Please do not write your name in the abstract as it will undergo an anonymous review process.
