Our first conference ran successfully on June 4-5, 2011 (http://www.engl.polyu.edu.hk/apela2011/).  We are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual APELA conference will be held October 2-3, 2012.

2nd Call for Papers:

Abstracts of 500 words are invited, in any of the following themes: 

1. What is the 'Art' in Language Arts? 

There is broad agreement that students enjoy and are profoundly impacted by the artistic aspect of texts used in language arts classes. Further, teachers find it possible, and often desirable to use elements of art in teaching language arts. Still, we are unsure what we mean by art, and unclear how to frame scholarly or pedagogical discussions of verbal art, whether in spoken, written or media texts. For example, verbal art clearly interacts with craftsmanship, especially in the context of teaching and learning a second language. But scholars and practitioners struggle to define these aspects of language and teaching praxis. The 2nd APELA conference invites abstracts for papers dealing with the following themes: 

- Verbal art, in second-language teaching and learning contexts 
- The art and the craft of language in written, spoken, and/or media texts, in teaching and learning contexts 
- Creativity in teaching and learning the Language Arts, the relationship between creative and critical thinking, and in teaching and learning the Language Arts 
- The art of language in drama performance 
- Teaching and learning the language-based craftsmanship that connects to the Language Arts 
- Teaching and learning creative, narrative and other non-expository writing 
- Art and craft in choral poetry reciting and debating 
- Interactions between reading and writing, and elements of language-based art such as is found poetry and novels 
- Language teaching and learning and new arts, for example new genres such as games, comics and manga, film and TV and interactive devices 
- Teaching and learning art and craft multimodal texts and multimedia authoring 
- Using the art in the language arts in teaching and learning intercultural sensitivity, citizenship and ethics 

2. Using Literature in English Teaching 

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to: 

- Using novels, short stories or poems in the second language class 
- Teaching longer or difficult works of literature 
- Using genre fiction to teach English 
- Creative writing in the second language class 
- Using authentic materials in class 

3. Drama in English Teaching 

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to: 

- Role-play, scenario and simulation in the second language classroom 
- Using debate and model UNs to teach English 
- Second language play production 
- Performance studies 
- The role of memorization in language practice and language learning 

4. Pop Culture in the Language Arts Classroom 

- Using film and popular music in teaching English 
- E-learning platforms, virtual worlds and mobile telephony in teaching English 
- Using manga, comics and anime in teaching English 

5. Putonghua Language Arts Papers: Creating the Canon 

One challenge of teaching Putonghua is the lack of appropriate texts - whether traditional written or contemporary media texts - to use as materials with students. Which texts are accessible, at which ability levels? Which texts are effective in developing cultural performance? 

Presentation Arrangement: 

Oral presentation: 20 minutes for each oral presentation, plus 10 minutes for Q&As 
Conference Languages: English and Putonghua (Mandarin)

Abstract submission deadline: June 30, 2012 
Notices of acceptance will be sent out by: July 25, 2012 
Deadline of registration: September 15, 2012 

Abstract Requirements: 

1. Abstracts should be written either in English or in Chinese. 
2. Abstracts should be sent in MS Word Format and should be a maximum of 500 words excluding references, and including 3-5 keywords. 
3. Format: 1 inch margin using 12 font, Times New Roman (English), 新細明體 (traditional Chinese), or SimSun (simplified Chinese). 

Submission Requirements: 

1. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author. 
2. Please send two soft copies as email attachments to egapela at inet.polyu.edu.hk, one with the title of the paper, name(s) of the author(s) as well as affiliation(s), and the other without the author's information. Please name your file the same as the title of your paper. 
3. Please list (1) title of the paper, (2) name(s) of the author(s), (3) affiliation(s), (4) mailing address(es) and (5) email address(es) in the email.
