Meeting Description:

3rd Conference of the Koldo Mitxelena Chair
Vitoria-Gasteiz, October 8-11, 2012

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Koldo Mitxelena's death, the Faculty of Arts of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) will be holding the 3rd Conference of the Koldo Mitxelena Chair (1st: 1997, 2nd: 2007). During the four days of the conference, some of the key issues of Mitxelena's research will be analysed, namely the history and prehistory of Basque language as well as various aspects of the linguistic theory and philology that have been used to develop them. The participants of the congress will present invited talks (50') and communications (20'), and some time will also be allowed for discussion.

The first day (October 8) will be devoted to the history and prehistory of the Basque language: diachronic syntax, morphology and phonology, vocabulary evolution, ancient Basque language, old standard Basque, chronology, etymology, etc.

Keynote speakers:

Joseba A. Lakarra (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)
Iñaki Camino (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)

The second day (October 9) will focus on several philological aspects: spelling, textual criticism and text editing, sources, lexicography and history of linguistic ideas, the linguistic situation of a determined period, periodization, etc.

Keynote Speakers:

Blanca Urgell (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)
Céline Mounole (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)

On the third day (October 10), Koldo Mitxelena's works will be analysed (FHV, L&PL, DGV, TAV, Hª de la literatura vasca) in view to locating them in the development of the research on this area.

Keynote Speakers:

Javier de Hoz (Complutense University of Madrid)
Joaquín Gorrochategui (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)
Ricardo Gómez (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU)
Other speakers to be announced

The fourth day (October 11) will serve as a complement to the Congress: in the morning, three guest speakers will talk about the main topics discussed during the first days; in the afternoon, there will be a presentation of the History of Basque Language guide book that is in progress.

Call for Papers:

We will gladly accept paper proposals on topics to be discussed in the first three days. Abstracts not exceeding one page and not containing the name of the author must be sent to ricardo.gomez at ehu.es by June 15. Papers can be presented in Basque, Spanish or English. The congress committee will announce accepted papers on June 30.

Important Dates:

June 15: Deadline for the submission of abstracts
June 30: Announcement of accepted paper proposals
October 8-11: Congress
