Department: Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)
Job Location: Maryland, USA
Web Address: http://www.casl.umd.edu
Job Rank: Senior Research Scientist/Area Director

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Less Commonly Taught Languages

Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language
(CASL) is seeking to expand its senior research leadership with the
addition of a linguist whose interests focus on Less Commonly
Taught Languages. Applications are invited for an Area Director
(AD) to lead CASL's interdisciplinary research program in this area,
which applies investigations of language structure and use to the
range of challenges that U.S. government language professionals
confront in the course of their work. These challenges include
interpretation, translation, and learning of languages that are not
widely taught or described. Current projects involve description of
and resource development for languages of interest to the US
government. Existing areas of expertise include Africa, Asia, and the
Middle East. The successful applicant will oversee and develop new
projects that apply basic research in language structure and use to
projects in other CASL research areas, including second-language
acquisition, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and
technology use.

The position has three major components:
- Research management: The AD works with CASL researchers,
U.S. government representatives and customers to develop research
that responds to government needs and requirements.
- Staff supervision and mentoring: The AD supervises research
scientists within the Less Commonly Taught Languages research
area.
- Leadership/Management: The AD provides leadership on strategic
research issues and other CASL management issues.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the
University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with
highly competitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in linguistics and be committed to an
interdisciplinary approach to the study of language. The candidate
should possess a strong record of individual research achievement
and publication. The candidate should also have skill and
experience in research supervision and administration.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the
appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is one of 14 university-affiliated research
centers in the nation. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science
research that results in improved performance on language tasks
relevant to the work of government language professionals. Our
research focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly taught
languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals, advancing the
capacity to use foreign language skills in government professions,
and improving the quality of human language technology. CASL is
part of a University wide research effort involving departments in
seven Colleges (see http://languagescience.umd.edu/).

Application:
For best consideration, please apply online by June 30, 2012 at the
application URL below. You will need to create an account and
submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae (CV), three writing
samples and a list of references containing the contact information

requested from short-listed candidates. The position will remain
open until a suitable candidate is selected. The University of
Maryland is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
