Meeting Description:

Geneva has been selected by the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes as the venue for the next International Congress of Linguists. The general focus of the 19th ICL is a look at the future of linguistics: Linguistics on the Brink of its Second Century: The Language-Cognition Interface. Our proposal for the Congress concentrates on the cognition-language relationship. The provisional choice of ten parallel sessions will provide ample opportunity to explore this topic, in sessions such as Origins of Language and Human Cognition, Experimental Approaches to Pragmatics and Discourse, Acquisition and Pathologies of Language, and Language and the Brain. Traditional areas of linguistics will also be represented (Diachronic Linguistics, Phonology and Morphology, Theoretical and Comparative Syntax, Lexical Semantics and Pragmatics, and Computational Linguistics), but the general orientation will be the relation between language and cognition. A retrospective look at the history of linguistics and the contribution of Saussure will be offered in a parallel session (The Saussure-Chomsky Connection: The Thread of Modern Synchronic Linguistics).

The provisional choice of ten parallel sessions will provide ample opportunity to explore this topic, in sessions such as Saussure's legacy, Origins of Language and Human Cognition, The life, growth and death of languages, Phonology and morphology,  Theoretical and comparative syntax,  Semantics-pragmatics interface, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics and multilingualism, Experimental and computational approaches to languages and linguistics, but the general orientation will be the relation between language and cognition. 

Final Call for Papers: 

The second call for papers of the 19th ICL is now open on the Website of the congress (http://www.cil19.org/en/calls-for-papers/second-call-for-papers/). Four types of proposals can be posted:

The submission of papers for workshops must send directly to the workshop organizer. Some more workshops (about 10) can be accepted and will complete the current list of workshops:

Abstract for Parallel Session and/or Poster Submission: 

Abstracts for session, poster, session or poster should specify the domain of the proposed contribution by choosing one of the proposed domains in the menu: the topics proposed for the sessions are posted on the parallel sessions webpages (http://www.cil19.org/en/sessions/), and should help you choose the more appropriate destination for your abstract. Abstracts submitted for presentation (regardless of whether they are to be presented in a parallel session and/or as posters) will be evaluated by the organizers of the separate sessions, with the help of additional reviewers. If an abstract does not seem to fall within the domain of the session indicated, it may be forwarded to another session as more appropriate. 

Workshop Organization: 

The Scientific Committee has approved an initial set of 22 workshops proposals. Some of these are 'open': abstracts can be submitted. Others are 'closed': the workshop organizers directly manage all contributions. Abstracts for 'open' workshops must be submitted and sent directly to the workshop organizers for evaluation; click http://www.cil19.org/en/workshops/ to reach the Workshops page, and consult each workshop subpage.

How to Submit an Abstract: 

An abstract submitted for a presentation can be kept open throughout the open period of submission. It can be 

a. saved at any time, regardless of how much of the submission form has been completed; 
b. changed in status by checking the appropriate button as 'provisory' (still in progress) or 'definitive' (complete and ready for evaluation). 

As long as the status of the abstract is 'provisory,' the applicant can reach it through his/her personal space (MyICL) on the website, and change anything on the form as desired. Please note that once the submission is marked as 'definitive' it cannot be modified further. 

Two weeks before the deadline associated with the call for papers, an email will be sent to those whose abstracts are still 'provisory,' so that these can be completed and marked as 'definitive' in time to meet the deadline for submission. 

Deadline for Submission: 

The deadline for submission of abstracts to parallel sessions or posters is 15 July 2012. 

Notice that most of the already selected workshop organizers have adopted the 15 July 2012 deadline. Nevertheless, some of them have decided to choose another closer or later date. So please read carefully their subpages for this information. 

Rules for Abstract Submission: 

- Word limit: 500 words (including examples but not title and references). 
- Word count should be indicated at the bottom of the abstract. 
- File format: if possible, type the text of your abstract directly into the submission form. If your abstract includes diagrams, pictures or other graphics, a .pdf file can be uploaded instead. 
- Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously, and should not include any author information. 
- Author information (name, affiliation, email address, etc.) are required on the submission form. All slots on the submission form must be answered. 
- An author may submit up to two abstracts (either as sole author or jointly with others) for the parallel and poster sessions. Submissions for workshops, either as organizer or contributor, are not limited and do not count against this. 
- For joint abstracts, the first author will be considered as the contact person. 

Notification of acceptance of contributions will be sent by fall 2012. 

Additional workshop proposals submitted in response to this call will be notified by the end of May, before to the opening of the third (and last) call for papers at the beginning of June 2012.
