Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics

Meeting Description:

Learning languages in the digital age offers a vast array of new possibilities for practitioners and learners in and beyond the language classroom which never the less present numerous challenges for learners and teachers alike. Engaging students in oral activities in and beyond the classroom, developing multi modal stand alone or collaborative learning objects, facilitating the delivery of enhanced feedback, enhancing blended learning and distance learning course delivery, these tools create multiple opportunities for the language practitioner. However, their uptake requires a complex blend of confidence, pedagogical integration and user support.

The aim of this one day workshop, part of the UK Higher Education Academy Workshop and Seminar Series, is to bring together HE practitioners who are early adopters and successful innovators in this field to showcase their work and to guide colleagues through a hands on collaborative session during which they will develop their experience in using free online voice tools to design specific learning materials which will then be showcased at the end of the session and with their permission uploaded to an online platform for further dissemination.

It is envisaged that this workshop could cover the use of tools such as Jing, Audacity, Voice Thread, Sound cloud and other such tools for a range of purposes including feedback, delivery of teaching materials and tutorials, collaborative learning, online language labs.
