Special issue on Lexicography of Japanese as a second/foreign language

The journal Acta Linguistica Asiatica invites contributions to a special issue
on the lexicography of Japanese as a second or foreign language, to be
published in October 2012.

Themes:

Japanese has an outstandingly long and rich lexicographical tradition, but
there have been relatively few dictionaries of Japanese targeted at learners of
Japanese as a foreign or second language until the end of the twentieth
century. With the growth of Japanese language teaching and learning around
the world, the rapid development of very large scale linguistic resources and
language processing technologies for Japanese, a new generation of
aggregated, collectively developed or crowd-sourced resources evolving in
the context of the social web, a shift from static paper to constantly
developing electronic resources, the spread of internet access on hand-held
devices, and new approaches to the use of language reference resources
stemming from these developments in the 21st century, dictionaries and
other reference resources for learners, teachers and users of Japanese as a
foreign/second language are being developed and used in new ways. This
special issues aims at presenting an overview of recent developments in this
growing field.

Original research papers as well as reports on on-going lexicographic or
didactical projects are welcomed. Themes include, but are not limited to:

- surveys of Japanese bilingual lexicography in particular language areas;

- historical developments of particular aspects of Japanese pedagogical
lexicography;

- recent advances of corpus-based lexicographic projects;

- reviews and comparisons of existing reference works of Japanese as a
foreign/second language, both of traditionally edited works by book publishers
or of other academic or collaborative projects;

- aspects of Japanese pedagogical lexicography for particular language pairs;

- the influence of Japan's lexicographic tradition for native speakers on the
development of lexicographic resources for speakers from other traditions;

- surveys of dictionary use and learners' preferences and attitudes towards
existing resources;

- development of lexicographic resources for the teaching of Japanese as a
second/foreign language in linguistic areas with no previous bilingual
dictionaries of Japanese;

- new forms and uses of Japanese language reference resources;

- any other pertinent theme related to the lexicography of Japanese as a
second/foreign language.
