Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) 
is seeking a faculty research assistant (FRA) to join in linguistic research in 
Less Commonly Taught Languages and in Technology Use. The projects in 
these two areas support CASL's mission to conduct state-of-the-art research 
that will result in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the 
work of government language professionals.

Duties: 
The FRA will assist with research on various aspects of critical languages 
such as Arabic, Pashto, Punjabi, and Bangla. Responsibilities include 
literature reviews, linguistic analysis, and proofreading, as well as contributing 
to descriptive grammars of critical languages. The FRA will also perform 
project administrative duties, such as taking notes, helping to prepare 
progress reports, and scheduling meetings.

Qualifications: 
Bachelor's degree or higher in linguistics or a related field is essential. 
Coursework in or knowledge of a less commonly taught language, particularly 
Arabic or another Middle Eastern, Central Asian, or South Asian language, is 
helpful. Also desirable is an ability and willingness to learn to work with 
computer applications for linguistic research, quantitative research methods, 
and corpus linguistics. The successful candidate will work as a member of a 
larger team and be motivated to receive training as needed.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the appropriate 
security clearance. 

CASL, established in 2003, is one of 14 university-affiliated research centers 
in the nation. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that 
results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of 
government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving 
knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the acquisition 
and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals, 
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government 
professions, and improving the quality of human language technology.

Compensation for this position is competitive commensurate with experience

leave days per University schedule).
