Description:
The LINGUIST List is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of internship positions for the summer of 2013, to be carried out at the LINGUIST offices in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor, Michigan. Internships are available for a three-month period between May and August 2013, and pay a modest wage.

Interns will have the opportunity to participate in the daily operations of the LINGUIST List and its parent organization, the Institute for Language Information and Technology (ILIT) at Eastern Michigan University. ILIT serves the discipline of linguistics by providing digital tools and services that sustain the scientific analysis of language, and by disseminating high-quality language data and linguistic information. In addition to the LINGUIST List website and mailing list, ILIT manages a number of grant-funded projects to develop the cyberinfrastructure of linguistics; interns may expect to work primarily on two of these projects:

Catalogue of Endangered Languages (ELCat) (http://endangeredlanguages.com): The Catalogue of Endangered Languages is a collaborative effort by the LINGUIST List and the University of Hawai'i Manoa to produce a comprehensive, reliable, up-to-date source of information about the world's endangered languages. Tasks for this project may include bibliographic research on the endangered languages of Africa and Australia; gathering of information pertinent to endangered languages; and processing user feedback from the Endangered Languages Project website.

MultiTree (http://multitree.org): The MultiTree project is a digital library of scholarly hypotheses about language relationships and subgroupings. This information is organized in a searchable database with a web interface, and each hypothesis is presented graphically as a diagram of a family tree. Tasks for this project include researching language relationship hypotheses and entering this information into the MultiTree database.

Interns may also work peripherally on the General Ontology for Linguistic Description (GOLD) (http://linguistics-ontology.org), the Lexical Enhancement via the GOLD Ontology (LEGO) project (http://lego.linguistlist.org), or Language and Location: A Map Accessibility Project (LL-MAP) (http://llmap.org), in addition to assisting with the LINGUIST List mailing list and website.

Interns will work 40 hours per week and receive a stipend of roughly USD $1200 per month. Housing is not provided for interns, although LINGUIST can assist you in finding accommodations. International applicants must have a visa that permits them to work in the US. LINGUIST List will work with applicants to obtain a J-1 visa; however, this is not guaranteed, as the administrative procedures involved are subject to university approval.

Some of the past interns at LINGUIST List have opted to pursue an MA at Eastern Michigan University and continue working at LINGUIST List as Graduate Assistants. For information on longer-term support available to students pursuing MA/MSc degrees at Eastern Michigan University, please see: http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-3525.html

To apply for an internship position, please fill out the internship application form: http://linguistlist.org/intern-application.cfm. Application materials include an academic transcript, a roughly 1000-word statement of interest, and (optionally) a letter of recommendation and resume. The deadline for applications is January 14th, 2013. Applicants will be contacted early in February; phone interviews with finalists will be scheduled for mid-February.

Application Deadline: 14-Jan-2013
