Description:

The University of Bern in Switzerland offers an Open rank Professorship in 
English Linguistics as either Assistant Professor (tenure track) or 
Extraordinary Professor, depending on qualifications and experience in the 
Department of English Languages and Literatures starting 1st August 2013 
(negotiable). A candidate appointed at the Assistant Professorship level will, 
upon successful completion of a probationary period, be promoted to 
Extraordinary Professor. 

We encourage applications from specialists in the following areas: language 
and globalisation, the history of English (any period) and language and (new) 
media, and would be especially pleased to receive applications from people 
who can contribute to the ongoing development of the Department's 
interdisciplinary research focus on language, literature and cultural mobility. 
However, we would welcome applications from anyone working in the 
linguistics of English language use whose work complements that of our 
current staff, diversifying what we can offer in teaching, supervision and 
research. 

Academic requirements for this position are a completed PhD plus a 
'Habilitation' or equivalent qualification (e.g. a second book, a cluster of 
international journal publications or a funded research project).

The new postholder will have to perform the following activities:
1.A successful applicant hired at the Extraordinary Professor level will 
become a Co-Director of the Department of English Languages and 
Literatures, expected to engage in the co-administration of the Department's 
activities and join the Senior Staff rotation of the role of Head of Department;
2. Teaching amounting to four weekly 90-minute sessions during the teaching 
semester. Teaching at all levels should cover a broad range of areas in 
linguistics and should not be restricted to the applicant's own narrow 
specialism, though the Department strongly encourages research-led 
teaching, especially at MA level;
3. Applicants are expected to engage in a vigorous programme of innovative 
research, and publish in internationally renowned peer-reviewed outlets;
4. Supervision of BA, MA and PhD theses within the study programmes 
offered by the Department and the Center for the Study of Language and 
Society;
5. Applicants will be expected to participate in interdisciplinary co-operations 
within the Center for the Study of Language and Society 
(http://www.csls.unibe.ch/content/index_eng.html), and to collaborate in its 
teaching and administration. 

Although the language of teaching and administration in the Department is 
English, the language of the Faculty is German. Successful candidates 
should, as a minimum, commit to acquiring a good working knowledge of 
German within two years of taking up their post.
