Description:

The Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Algonquian
linguistics, preferably specializing in Cree and/or Ojibwe, at the rank of
Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2013. The position involves teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of specialization and in at
least one core area of linguistics, graduate student supervision,
participation in department initiatives such as the Summer Institute on Cree
Language and Narrative (alternatively on Ojibwe), developing an active
research program and service to the University community. Qualified candidates
will have a PhD completed by the time of appointment, have active field-work
experience with an Algonquian language, and be able to demonstrate competence
in teaching and research. Evidence of scholarly peer-reviewed publications is
preferred. The starting salary will reflect the qualifications and experience
of the chosen candidate. Position Number: 15335.

The Department of Linguistics, situated within a linguistically diverse
geographical area, has long been a leading centre for the linguistic study of
Indigenous languages of Canada, with particular attention to the Algonquian
language family. While maintaining a strong commitment to core areas of
linguistic teaching and research, the department has growing interests in
typology and corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistic theory, and
sociolinguistics. The department houses the undergraduate-level ASL-English
Interpretation Program (jointly with Red River College). The department has an
active graduate program, and wishes to continue attracting graduate students
with research interests in Algonquian linguistics. There is potential for
collaboration with other departments such as Native Studies, where both Cree
and Ojibwe are taught, and which also has an active graduate program. More
