Description:

The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina invites
applications for MA and PhD studies in linguistics for the academic year
2013-2014.

The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina makes the
financial support for its graduate students a priority. All PhD students in
the program are fully supported for 4 years. The program has been particularly
successful in securing additional support through the University of South
Carolina Presidential Fellowship Program, the University of South Carolina
Presidential Teaching Fellowship Program, the College of Arts and Sciences
Dean’s Dissertation Year Fellowship competition and now has additional
opportunities for fellowship support through a generous endowment from the
Bilinski Foundation.

Linguistics at USC is comprehensive in its scope. Its mission is to train
students to pursue research and teach in a wide range of linguistic
sub-disciplines. The program strives to develop students' analytical skills
and to encourage creative, critical approaches to data, models, and theories.
In addition to requiring all students to have a theoretical foundation in
general linguistics, phonology, and syntax, the program affords students the
opportunity to take coursework or pursue specializations in other areas:
discourse analysis, French/German/Spanish linguistics, historical linguistics,
linguistic anthropology, philosophy of language, phonology, psycholinguistics,
second/foreign language acquisition and teaching, semantics, sociolinguistics,
and syntax.

The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina is
interdepartmental in nature and interdisciplinary in orientation. It has
strong ties to the departments of Anthropology; English Language and
Literature; Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Philosophy; Psychology and
English Programs for Internationals. In addition, the Program has the support
of consulting faculty in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Computer
Science and Engineering; and the College of Education, whose areas of
expertise are in, or related to, linguistics, and who frequently serve on
thesis and doctoral committees.
