Meeting Description:

This conference brings together scholars interested in studying the use of literature, drama and popular culture in the teaching and learning paradigm called Language Arts. Formerly called APELA (Applying Putonghua / English Language Arts), the conference was renamed Language Arts and Linguistics in fall, 2012. 

Venue: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

Call for Papers:

Abstracts of 300 words are invited, on any of the following themes:

1. Using Literature in Language Teaching and Learning

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to: 

- Using novels, short stories or poems in the second-language class 
- Teaching longer or difficult works of literature 
- Using genre fiction to teach language
- Creative writing in the second language class 
- Using authentic materials in class 

2. Using Drama in Language Teaching and Learning

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to: 

- Role-play, scenario and simulation in the second-language classroom 
- Using debate and model UNs to teach language
- Second-language play production 
- Performance studies 
- The role of memorization in language practice and language learning 

3. Using Pop Culture in Language Teaching and Learning

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to: 

- Using film and popular music in language teaching
- Using games and new media in language teaching 
- E-learning platforms, virtual worlds and mobile telephony in language teaching 
- Using manga, comics and anime in language teaching 
- Multi-literacies, multimodality in language teaching 

4. Creative and Critical Thinking, Ethics and Civics, Cultural Sensitivity in Language Teaching and Learning

Papers under this theme can include but are not limited to:

- Verbal art, in second-language teaching and learning contexts 
- Creativity in teaching and learning language
- Critical thinking in teaching and learning language
- The relationship between creative and critical thinking in teaching and learning language
- Using choral poetry in teaching and learning language
- Teaching and learning intercultural sensitivity, citizenship and ethics in second-language contexts

Papers may be delivered in English or Chinese. We welcome papers on the use of Language Arts in teaching any language.

Presentation Arrangement:

Oral presentation: 20 minutes for each oral presentation, plus 10 minutes for Q&As
Conference languages: English and Putonghua (Mandarin)

Important Dates:

Abstract submission deadline: 30 May 2013
Notices of acceptance will be sent out by: 30 June 2013
Early bird registration by: 31 July 2013

Abstract Requirements:

1. Abstracts should be written either in English or in Chinese.

2. Abstracts should be sent in MS Word Format and should be a maximum of 300 words including a maximum of 5 references, and 5 keywords (maximum 12 words).

3. Format: 1 inch margin using 12 font, Times New Roman (English), 新細明體 (traditional Chinese), or SimSun (simplified Chinese). 

Submission Requirements: 

1. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author. 

2. Please send two soft copies as email attachments to LALConf at polyu.edu.hk, as follows:

Soft Copy 1:

- At the top: name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s)of author(s), email(s) of authors 
- In the body: title and abstract 
- At the end: maximum of 5 references and 5 keywords (maximum 12 words)

Soft Copy 2 (anonymous):

- Title and abstract, references and keywords 

3. Filenames should be the title of the presentation, omitting author(s)’ name(s).

4. In the body of the email, please also list:

- Title of the paper 
- Name(s) of the author(s)
- Affiliation(s) of the author(s)
- Email(s) of author(s)
- Postal address(es) of author(s)

Those submitting abstracts will be contacted no later than 30 June 2013, to confirm their acceptance. Accepted abstracts have the possibility of having the full paper published in the APELA volume. Full text submission due-date is 30 October 2013.
