Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics

Call Deadline: 22-Oct-2012

Meeting Description:

IPrA Workshop (Accepted Panel): New Directions in Experimental Pragmatics
Organizers: E. Allyn Smith (Université du Québec à Montéal) and Marina Terkourafi (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

As a young and growing subfield of linguistics, experimental pragmatics is perhaps best known for work on scalar implicature, which has helped establish both its theoretical purview and methodological profile. However, scalar implicature represents only a small portion of what is routinely investigated under the heading of pragmatics, with more recent experimental work currently exploring a wider range of pragmatic phenomena. This panel seeks to showcase the newest work in experimental pragmatics, focusing on the inclusion of work on a wide variety of pragmatic phenomena and in a variety of languages, linked only by the psycholinguistic methodology adopted.

Call for Papers:

Submissions are invited for abstracts (max. 500 words) for presentations in the 'New Directions in Experimental Pragmatics' workshop at the International Pragmatics Association Meeting. Presentations will be up to 20 minutes with both individual question periods for each paper as well as a discussion of experimental methods in pragmatics in general. As mentioned in the description of the workshop, we seek to showcase the newest work in experimental pragmatics, focusing on the inclusion of work on a wide variety of pragmatic phenomena and in a variety of languages, linked only by the psycholinguistic methodology adopted. Experimental work related to any of the following areas (and others) would be appreciated:

- Speech acts
- Evidentiality
- Presuppositions
- Topic/focus
- Social cognition and real-world knowledge
- Etc.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be sent to smith.eallyn at uqam.ca by October 22, 2012. Accepted authors will be notified within one week, by October 29 and will then need to submit the same abstract to the general IPrA site themselves by November 1, 2012, which will also require IPrA membership. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the organizers via the same email address.

Important Dates:

Submission deadline: October 22, 2012
Notification of acceptance: October 29, 2012
