(Co-)constructing Interpersonally Sensitive Activities across Institutional Settings

This panel will investigate how conversational participants go about broaching, constructing and negotiating potentially interpersonally sensitive act(ivitie)s or sequence types, with a focus  on naturalistic spoken interaction across a range of institutional environments (e.g. commercial settings, medical/therapeutic settings, educational settings, media settings, etc.). Relevant activities may be (but are not limited to) complaining, disagreeing, and apologizing.  (Potentially delicate activities such as requesting and thanking, among others, will only be considered in those cases where they are not contextually expected, and/or where expected instances display formats that interactants can be shown to orient to as marked in some way.) 

Call for Papers:

We welcome analyses that focus on one or more of the following:

- (Para-)linguistic (co-)construction (prosody, grammar, gestures, and/or gaze) 
- Sequential placement
- Socio-pragmatic import 
- Aspects of identity construction and attribution
- Signs of interpersonal struggle and resistance
- Intra-setting variation in the handling of delicate activities which appears linked to parameters such as age, gender, social class or network 

Contributors are encouraged (but not required) to pay attention to how the (co-)construction of such activities, and the type and format of the responses they receive from co-interactants, in institutional settings differ systematically from what may be found in informal, conversational settings within the same culture, and to what extent they may contribute to defining interactants in particular institutional settings as forming communities of practice.

While only studies involving data from the spoken channel (whether face-to-face or over the telephone/Skype) will be considered, multimodal data are very welcome. Studies may be limited to a single type of setting in a particular culture, but may also take a comparative perspective on one or both of these dimensions.

Contributions are invited from within a variety of theoretical and methodological frameworks, e.g. Conversation Analysis, (im)politeness theories, ethnography of communication, interactional sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, cross-cultural pragmatics.
