Dissertation Abstract:

The objective of the present research is to provide an account of the 
course, the role and the orientation of English as a school curriculum 
subject in Greece, from 1913 to 1967, as defined by the given political 
and socio-economic conditions on an international, national and local 
level, the government policy directives, the methods and approaches 
officially endorsed, as well as the forms daily classroom practice takes 
within this context, in order to achieve a comparison with the 
contemporary educational reality. More specifically, this study presents a 
comprehensive picture of the teaching practice and school reality with 
regard to English, from its first appearance in the Greek educational 
system, located at the onset of the 20th century, until the late 1960s. At 
the same time, the study identifies the various parameters and factors 
that have influenced the subject, so as to gain perspective on current 
English language teaching trends, methods, approaches and techniques.
