Job Location: , United Kingdom
Web Address: www.abdn.ac.uk
Job Rank: Research Fellow

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics; Lexico-Syntactic Text Simplification

Description:

A position is available for an independent and highly motivated individual
to work as a Research Fellow in the area of Text Simplification and
Readability. From a theoretical perspective, the goal is to gain an
understanding of the text revisions humans perform to simplify text, and to
learn simplification rules from corpora (e.g., the Simple English
Wikipedia) and study the effect on readability. From an applied
perspective, the goal is to implement a system for automatic text
simplification that can perform the wide range of lexico-syntactic
revisions that humans perform. It is expected that the Research Fellow will
build on existing infrastructure at Aberdeen for performing text
simplification using transformations of typed dependency representations,
with a focus on automatically acquiring transformation rules, controlling
their application, or evaluating readability of simplified text. Depending
on the skills the candidate brings, the emphasis can be adjusted.

The candidate will be expected to hold a PhD in a relevant area, such as
Computational Linguistics or Psycholinguistics (or be in the process of
submitting or correcting their PhD thesis). This post is supported by EPSRC
funding for 16 months and will be offered accordingly.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale (£30,122 -
£35,938 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and
experience. Consideration will be given to making an appointment at
Research Assistant level in the first instance (salary range £25,251 -
£28,401 per annum) for individuals in the final stages of completing their
PhD.

Informal enquiries about this position should be directed to Dr Advaith
Siddharthan at the contact email address below.

Should you require a visa to undertake paid employment in the UK you will
be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a
