Dear all,

We are happy to announce the release of the SALTO source code. SALTO is a graphical tool that supports manual annotation of text corpora with (frame) semantic argument structures. The tool was developed and used by the SALSA project
(http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/projects/salsa/)
at Saarland University under the direction of Manfred Pinkal.

SALTO can be used to add a second (typically semantic) layer of
annotation to corpora that are already syntactically analyzed (through manual annotation or automatically). Main features are:

    * Query-based creation of subcorpora for annotation.
    * Distribution of corpora to different annotators.
    * Definition of Items and Classes/Tags to be annotated.
    * Comfortable annotation with visual editor and mouse-menues.
    * Semi-automatic merging and adjudication of parallel annotations in same editor.

The SALTO binaries have been available for several years and have been downloaded over 500 times. Now we also release the Java source code under GNU General Public License, thus enabling users to customise SALTO to their own annotation requirements.

The SALTO source code and binaries can be obtained from:
http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/projects/salsa/page.php?id=software

The SALTO documentation and license conditions can be found here:
http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/projects/salsa/salto/doc/

An overview of SALTO is provided in the following publication:

A. Burchardt, K. Erk, A. Frank, A. Kowalski and S. Pado. SALTO -- A Versatile Multi-Level Annotation Tool. In Proceedings of LREC-2006, Genoa, Italy, 2006.
http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/projects/salsa/papers/lrec06-tool.pdf

Note: If you just want to use SALTO, please download the
binaries. Only download the source code if you want to modify SALTO and know how to do this. Unfortunately, we cannot provide technical support.

If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to
