University or Organization: Hokkaido University
Department: International Media and Communication
Job Location: Hokkaido, Japan
Web Address: http://www.imc.hokudai.ac.jp/rfmc/
Job Rank: Associate/Full Professor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; TEFL

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Hokkaido University is pleased to announce one or more openings for
a full-time, non-tenured, specially appointed associate professor or
professor positions in TEFL (teaching English as foreign language).

The official job announcement for this position and many others are
online at the Japanese government's academic job search website:
http://jrecin.jst.go.jp/. The reference number for this position is
D112091240. The following explanation of the position is based on the
official version. If discrepancies exist, the official version takes
precedence.

The contract is 3 years with an MA and 4 years with a PhD with an
opportunity for renewal (the length of the renewed contract is
undecided pending legislation). Renumeration is approximately
6,400,000 yen per year.

We seek vibrant individuals who (a) are native speakers of English of
any variety, (b) have an MA or PhD, (c) have an active research career
in linguistics, TESOL, TEFL, area studies (such as Japanese, Asian, or
American studies), or media studies, and (d) have professional
qualifications or experience in TESOL or TEFL, particularly at the
tertiary level.

Language proficiency in Japanese is not required, but is a definite
advantage on and off campus. Given the nature of language learning,
it would behoove instructors to demonstrate their art by acquiring non-
native languages.

Work starts on 1 April 2013. In Japan, the school year starts in April.
Hokkaido University is on the semester system (two terms per year).
First week of April through the last week of July is spring semester.
Last week of September through the last week of January is fall
semester. The last week of February is entrance exams. During these
three periods instructors perform the duties of (a) teaching up to 9
courses (18 classroom hours) per week in TEFL or subjects related to
English language, (b) developing teaching materials, (c) conducting
academic research, and (d) preparing and grading entrance
examinations.

Applications should include the following: (a) a cover letter stating your
reasons for applying, teaching philosophy, and any particular
contributions you can make to the department (up to 2 A4 pages), (b)
your curricula vitae, including your current employer, total years of
TEFL experience, and date of birth, (c) your list of publications, which
should be divided into (c1) books, (c2) articles in refereed journals or
book chapters, (c3) non-refereed articles or conference proceedings,
and (c4) conference presentations or talks, (d) the names, affiliations,
titles, email addresses, and telephone numbers of two references, at
least one of whom must be currently employed in higher education, (e)
a sample of your research, which may be a published paper, a draft of
a conference presentation, or a chapter from your MA or PhD
dissertation, and (f) a certificate of your highest academic degree. All
this material should be submitted electronically in either PDF or
Microsoft Word format. Documents may be scanned. No hardcopies
please.

Applicants should not limit themselves to submitting only the material
mentioned above. Applicants are encouraged to enclose any
supportive material that shows their strengths, such as video
recordings of their teaching practice, comments from their ELLs
(English language learners), examples of courseware that they
developed, or screenshots of CALL systems that they use. Significant
achievements such as teaching excellence awards should definitely be
highlighted.

The first round of hiring closes on 9 November 2012.
