Tampere Linguistics Forum 2013 - Perspectives on Complementation

The Tampere Linguistics Forum, hosted by the School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies of the University of Tampere, aims to bring together researchers investigating particular areas of linguistics. The inaugural Forum is scheduled for August 23, 2013, and its topic is 'Complementation'.

Complementation has been the object of many a study during the past four or five decades and there is still much left unexplored. Even the definition of 'complementation' and what a 'complement' is varies depending on the framework one is working with. For example, Quirk et al. (1985) define complementation as 'the function of a part of a phrase or clause which follows a word, and completes the specification of a meaning relationship which that word implies.' Biber et al. (1999) state that '[c]omplement clauses are a type of dependent clause used to complete the meaning relationship of an associated verb or adjective in a higher clause.' What is common to all interpretations of 'complementation' is the idea that the complement completes the linguistic manifestation of some abstract unit of meaning.

Call for Papers

We invite papers coming from any framework or orientation, and dealing with any relevant aspect of complementation research. Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes + 5 minutes for discussion. The language of the conference is English, but the subject language of the papers is, of course, not restricted to English and we encourage researchers working on other languages to present papers in order to provide a more multifaceted perspective on the essence of what complementation is.

Abstract Submission and Guidelines:

The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2013 and the abstracts should be sent to mikko.hoglund at uta.fi. The abstracts should be a maximum of 400 words (excluding references), written in Times New Roman 12 pt, and the format should be .doc or .pdf. Please include the name of the author(s), affiliation, and the title of the paper in the body of the email, not in the paper itself. The abstracts will be reviewed by the scientific committee. Authors will be notified of their acceptance by the end of February 2013.
