Job Rank: Assistant/Associate/Senior Research Scientist

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation

Description:
The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)
is seeking to fill a research faculty position in Measurement, Statistics, and
Evaluation to work in its interdisciplinary national language research program.
CASL seeks scholars with expertise particularly in the modeling of change
over time, the design of sensitive measures, and program evaluation. The
ideal candidate will have strong foundations in quantitative methods such as
factor analysis, logistic regression, structural equation modeling, hierarchical
linear modeling, and meta-analysis. Areas of specialization may include
linear/nonlinear mixed effects and random coefficient models, latent growth
models, mixture models, psychometrics, and Bayesian modeling. The
successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary teams - including
second language acquisition researchers, anthropologists,
industrial/organizational and cognitive psychologists, and computational/
descriptive/psycholinguists - on projects that optimize language, culture, and
job training and promote and track the acquisition and maintenance of critical
foreign languages.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the
University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with highly
competitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in measurement,
statistics, and evaluation, or a related field and a record of research
productivity and publications. The center is seeking people who will contribute
to the strategic direction of CASL and will participate in multiple research
projects. Candidates' research and publications should demonstrate the
ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and to work
collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the appropriate
security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is one of 14 university-affiliated research centers
in the nation. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that
results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of
government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving
knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the acquisition
and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals,
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government
professions, and improving the quality of human language technology. CASL
is expanding its mission to include new directions in language and
intelligence analysis. For more information on CASL, please go to
www.casl.umd.edu.

Application:
For best consideration, please apply online by November 30,
2012 at the application URL below. You will need to create an account and
submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae (CV), three writing samples
and a list of references containing the contact information for at least three
professional referees. References will later be requested from short-listed
candidates. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is
selected. The University of Maryland is an affirmative action, equal
opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
