You are invited to participate in an international conference in French and General Linguistics to be held on June 11-12, 2013, at Tel Aviv and Bar Ilan Universities.

The conference, which follows on two previous international conferences on 'Approximation and Precision' (2008) and 'Approximation and Precision II' (2010), aims at continuing discussion of the notions of approximation and precision in different linguistic domains (syntax, semantics, lexicology, pragmatics) in both diachronic and synchronic perspectives.  

Rationale:

The notions of approximation and precision play a role in various areas of linguistic analysis, to the extent where there is hardly any facet of linguistics in which they are not involved, whether implicitly or explicitly. Concepts of measure, duration, degree, quantity, quality and scalarity, inter alia, go hand in hand with those of approximation and precision, and varied lexical categories, not only verbs and nouns, but also adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, and prepositions constitute fertile areas for investigation of such notions. 

>From a theoretical point of view, these concepts are related both to the general domains of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and language history, and to specific facets of lexico-semantics such as polysemy and comparison. Further, historically oriented investigations of these and related terms can serve to account for their evolution from qualitative to quantitative meanings and/or to intermediate positions between these two extremes. Taken together, these issues highlight the importance of approximation and precision in linguistic history and analysis, and the need for exploring these notions in greater depth. 

Colloque international : Approximation et précision III
11-12 juin 2013

Nous vous invitons à participer à un colloque international de linguistique française et générale qui se tiendra les 11 et 12 juin 2013 aux universités de Tel-Aviv et Bar Ilan. 

Ces journées font suite aux deux premiers colloques internationaux 'Approximation et précision' et 'Approximation et précision II' qui se sont déroulés en 2008 et 2010, et souhaitent prolonger la réflexion sur les notions d'approximation et de précision dans les divers domaines linguistiques en diachronie et synchronie.

Argumentaire :

Les notions d'approximation et de précision interviennent dans plusieurs domaines de la langue. On pourrait même dire qu'il est difficile de trouver un champ linguistique où elles ne sont pas présentes de manière implicite ou explicite.

Les concepts de 'mesure', de 'durée', de 'degré', de 'quantité', de 'qualité' et de 'scalarité', entre autres, vont de pair avec ceux d'approximation et de précision. Par ailleurs, les adverbes, les adjectifs, les pronoms, les prépositions et, bien entendu, les substantifs et les verbes sont des terrains propres à l'exploration de ces notions. 

D'un point de vue théorique, ces concepts sont liés à la syntaxe, à la sémantique, à la pragmatique, à la lexicologie et, tout particulièrement, à la polysémie et à la comparaison. De même, une étude à orientation historique permettrait d'expliquer l'évolution de ces termes.

En somme, les notions abordées témoignent bien de l'importance de l'approximation et de la précision dans la langue et de la nécessité de les explorer davantage. 

Call for Papers:

Proposals are invited for talks of 20 minutes length followed by 10 minutes discussion. Scholars wishing to participate should submit a title and a one-page abstract of proposed presentations in French or English, on or before January 10, 2013, in French or in English, by email attachment to the following addresses:

Notifications of acceptance will be issued by March 1, 2013.

The conference languages are French and English.

A collection of conference papers approved by anonymous peer review is expected to be published in the course of 2014.

Notifications prévues pour le 1er mars 2013 au plus tard.

La durée prévue des communications est de 20 minutes suivies d'une période de questions de 10 minutes.

Les articles issus de ce colloque feront l'objet d'une publication collective dans le courant de l'année 2014, à la suite d'une évaluation selon le principe du peer review anonyme.
