Perpignan, 6-8 June 2013

The 2013 AFLS (Association for French Language Studies) conference will take place in Perpignan, France from 6-8 June. This conference will be a forum for exploring the notion of 'mise en relief' in French. Different understandings of this notion will be brought together and explored from a linguistic point of view, but also in relation to applied issues and in terms of language policy.

The city of Perpignan la Catalane (http://www.mairie-perpignan.fr/) is located in the southernmost part of France, just a few miles from Spain, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department (http://www.tourismepyreneesorientales.com/). Perpignan can be reached by high-speed train and is under 6 hours from Paris. The main airports for travelling to Perpignan are: Perpignan, Gerona, Barcelona, Montpellier. The Univeristy of Perpignan Via Domitia (http://www.univ-perp.fr/) can be reached easily by bus from the train station and the airport. 

Call for Papers:

Concerning the linguistic approach, proposals are invited on the ways of describing and/or challenging the notion of 'mise en relief' (or focus, salience, etc.) in language, or in text or discourse (micro/macro-syntax, rhythm, prosody, typographical features, etc.). Moreover, what types of problems does this notion encounter in the field of translation and in the analysis of texts (literary or otherwise)? With regard to the teaching and learning of French, as well as studies looking to explore the applications and implications of the linguistic approach outlined above, proposals are also invited on the question of what actually constitutes the language to be taught or learned: are all varieties of French given the same weight in the teaching/learning of L2 French? How have things changed over the years? What are the underlying models? Where do they come from and how are they applied? What is the impact of corpora? How does French for specific purposes fit in? Lastly, proposals are invited that look at issues of language policy in France and abroad. What projects are there for promoting and teaching French? What type or types of French are concerned? In what areas, for whom? What impact do these choices have on the language?

Proposals that do not specifically deal with the notion of 'mise en relief' as it has been outlined here are welcome insofar as they contribute to the general reflection given above and relate to the areas traditionally covered by AFLS. Proposals that do not fall within one or more of these broad areas (linguistics, teaching and learning, etc.), but which relate to the general theme of the conference, will also be considered. In these cases, the author is asked to specify the particular area(s) concerned (sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, etc.).

The languages of the conference are French and English; the proposal should be in the intended language of communication. Presentations will be scheduled for 30 minute slots  (20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for questions).

Proposals should be sent as a .doc, .rtf or .odt file to the following addresses before January 11, 2013: bilger at univ-perp.fr and henry.tyne at univ-perp.fr. Proposals should not exceed 1000 words. The first page should include only the title together with the author's name, address and professional affiliation. The proposal should mention explicitly the given area(s) into which the work best fits.

All proposals will be reviewed anonymously by at least two members of the international panel of specialists (chosen from the AFLS research committee and the conference advisory board). PhD students wishing to be considered for the AFLS PhD student prize (best presentation by a doctoral student) should clearly indicate this intention on the first page of their proposal by appending the following mention: 'PHDSTUDENT PRIZE AWARD'. Co-authored papers can only be considered for the award if all authors concerned are PhD students.

Key Dates and Further Information:

The outcome of the reviewing process will be communicated mid-February. Registration will be possible from then and an early-bird rate (80 euros for students, 110 euros for academics) will be available for one month.

There will be a publication of selected papers, details to be announced at a later date.
