Description:

Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral position in the
Department of Linguistics at Stanford University. The position is funded by
a three-year NSF grant to Dr. Meghan Sumner entitled "Understanding the
perception and recognition of spoken words: Effects of phonetics,
phonological variation, and speech mode". The postdoctoral scholar will
work with Dr. Sumner to investigate the integrated effects of linguistic
and social information on the categorization of speech sounds and the
recognition of spoken words.

Primary responsibilities include preparing findings for publication and
oral presentation, planning and conducting research projects, and actively
participating in the laboratory community. The postdoctoral researcher will
also oversee graduate and undergraduate students working on related
collaborative projects.

The candidate must be proficient in acoustic analysis, Praat scripting,
E-Prime, and basic statistics. Background and experience with manuscript
submission to scholarly journals is desirable, as is experience with
advanced statistics, computer programming, and eye-tracking methodologies.
Applicants should have a track record of published work commensurate with
their experience.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in experimental
phonetics or laboratory phonology, will be well versed in literature
relating to phonetic variation (production and perception/recognition), and
will have a strong grasp of the prominent theories of speech perception and
spoken word recognition. English language proficiency is required.

Applicants must have a PhD in Linguistics or a related field. Salary will
be based on University guidelines for postdoctoral fellows, and will be
commensurate with experience. The initial appointment is for one year, and
may be renewed for up to three years, pending final administrative and
budgetary approval. Review of applications will begin promptly on November
1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated
start date is flexible, beginning as early as March 1, 2013, but no later
