Call Deadline: 20-May-2013

Meeting Description:

The project ‘Meeting Darwin’s last challenge: toward a global tree of human languages and genes’ (ERC Advanced Grant n. 295733 LANGELIN (LANguages-GEnes LINeages), PI Giuseppe Longobardi, University of York) is organising a workshop on Advances in Phylogenetic Linguistics, to be held in Ragusa (Sicily) on July 15-17, 2013.

Along with presentations by the LANGELIN team, a restricted number of invited speakers, including D. Sportiche, H. Koopman, C. Yang, R. Gray, T. Fitch, D. Lightfoot, R. Berwick, C. Boeckx, R. Ryder, P. Forster, and representatives of the Rethinking Comparative Syntax project team (ERC Advanced Grant ReCoS, PI Ian Roberts, University of Cambridge), have agreed to give plenary addresses.

Conference Venue, Travel and Accommodation:

The workshop will be held at the ‘Teatro Donnafugata’, in Ragusa Ibla. Ragusa Ibla is the oldest area of Ragusa, located on a small hill just in front of the city: from the historical center of Ragusa, it can be easily reached on foot (roughly 15 minutes).

The airport closest to Ragusa is Catania-Fontanarossa Vincenzo Bellini International Airport (http://www.aeroporto.catania.it/?lang=eng). A bus service (http://www.etnatrasporti.it) from the airport operates every day. The bus stops in Ragusa Superiore (Via Zama). The trip takes roughly 90 minutes, and costs approximately 9 euros (one way). By car, (from Catania) Ragusa can be reached through SS194 (90 minutes) or A18 (110 minutes; A18 is a toll-free highway that ends in Rosolini, 40 km far from Ragusa: the trip from Rosolini to Ragusa takes 45-60 minutes).

Various hotels and B&B in Ibla and in the historical center of Ragusa will offer special prices to the Workshop participants: for information and reservation, please contact us via email.

A list of hotels and B&B in the area can be found at:
