Call Deadline: 03-May-2013

Meeting Description:

The second International Symposium on Functional Linguistics will be held at the Federal University of São Carlos. As in the first symposium it aims to bring together researchers from different functionalist backgrounds, to discuss theoretical and descriptive issues from different points of view. This symposium will specifically address the question of the interface between morphosyntax, semantics and pragmatics in the description and analysis of language. It departs from the principle that grammar is somewhat ‘modular’, which means that the meaning, in a broad sense, is encoded in languages through levels / layers / patterns that characterize functional theories in general.

Guest Speakers:

Adele Goldberg (Princeton University - USA)
Christian Matthiessen (POLYU - Hong Kong)
Daniel Garcia Velasco (Universidad de Oviedo - Spain)
Maria Helena de Moura Neves (UNESP/UPM - Brasil)
Robert van Valin (UDuesseldorf - Germany)

2nd Call for Papers:

The aim of the Symposium is to bring together students and researchers from different functionalist theoretical perspectives to discuss current researches on language description (including sign languages), typological studies, linguistic change and cognitive aspects.

We invite researchers to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations with any Functional theoretical background or linked to any of the functionalist perspectives bellow:

Theory of Functional Grammar
Theory of Functional Discourse Grammar
Theory of Role and Reference Grammar
Theory of Systemic Functional Grammar
Theory of Grammaticalization
Construction Grammar
West Coast Functionalism
Rhetorical Structure Theory
Textual Linguistics
Sociocognitivism
Functionalism and teaching
Typology and functionalism
Functionalism and language change

The topics of the Symposium include:

Functional Description of Natural Languages
Syntax
Semantics
Pragmatics
Grammaticalization
Lexicalization
Lexical Representation
Lexicon and Grammar
Linguistic Change
Language and Cognition
Typology
Functionalism and Teaching

The deadline for submitting abstracts is May 3, 2013. All abstracts will be evaluated anonymously. Please submit your abstract at: http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/silf2013.
