Description:

The project unit “Lexical conditioning of syntactic structures -
clause-embedding predicates” (= PB3) at the Zentrum für Allgemeine
Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) invites applications for one research position for
six years starting from January 1th 2014, provided the funding will be
ensured.

The project investigates the interaction of specific lexical requirements of
clause-embedding predicates and the types of clauses they embed. The goal is
to determine systematic correlations within and across languages, and to
explain such correlations within the frameworks of truth-conditional semantics
and generative syntax. Research has focused so far mainly on German, for which
a large database for clause-embedding predicates was compiled; in the next
funding period this should be substantially extended to other languages,
depending on the research experience of the applicant. The project is part of
the main research program of ZAS, “Embedding, linkage and constituent
boundaries in speech, grammar and discourse”, with projects ranging from
phonetics, prosody, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and language acquisition.

The responsibilities of the position include mainly research and coordination
of the project unit (three to four researchers) as well as some administrative
work for ZAS. Acquisition of additional projects within the research topic is
welcome; teaching in one of the universities in the Berlin area, about one
class per year, is expected. The position is remunerated according to E13 of
the German TVOeD pay scale

Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. by the time of the appointment, and
preferably should have some post-doctoral experience. A strong background in
semantics and syntax is expected, as well as experience with SQL databases and
the readiness to further develop the project’s database.

Applications must be submitted via electronic mail and include the following
four items:
1) a CV including a complete list of publications;
2) electronic copies of three representative publications in pdf-format;
3) a letter of intent specifying research experience and plans in detail;
4) the names of at least two scholars to be contacted for letters of
recommendation.
