Corpus Linguistics, Speech Processing

Description:

The University of Cambridge ALTA Institute for research on automated language
teaching and assessment funded by Cambridge English Language Assessment is
offering four doctoral studentships to suitably qualified applicants with
qualifications and/or experience in the areas of computational and/or corpus
linguistics, speech recognition, and/or machine learning.

Following on from our work on the English Profile Programme, Cambridge English
Language Assessment will fund a new institute to undertake research on
Automated Language Teaching and Assessment (ALTA). The institute will be
administered by the Computer Laboratory but includes principal investigators
from the Departments of Engineering and Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.
The initial period of funding is for 5 years beginning in October 2013.
However, the ALTA institute is intended to be a rolling research programme
with funding renewed for a further 5 years towards the end of the current
period.

We are currently offering four fully-funded studentships to suitably qualified
applicants wishing to work in any of the above areas of research on problems
such as automated assessment of textual or spoken material, error detection
and correction, etc. (See the English Profile Programme,
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~ejb1/epp.html for examples of research undertaken.)

For information on research carried out at CUCL
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research and for ALTA research within the NLIP group:
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/users/ejb1/alta.html

Applications should be made via the University of Cambridge's Student Registry
by no later than 30th June 2013.

These studentships may be awarded to citizens of any country and are awarded
on the basis of successful application to the aforementioned programme, the
candidate's academic excellence, and a good fit between the research proposal
and EPP. Applicants are encouraged to email
Postgraduate.Admissions at cl.cam.ac.uk for more detailed instructions before
submitting their applications.
