Description:

Applications are now being accepted for a full-time post-doctoral research scientist in Dr. Elizabeth Johnson’s Child Language and Speech Studies (C.L.A.S.S.) lab. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field of study (e.g., Psychology, Linguistics, Hearing and Speech Sciences, or Cognitive Science), excellent writing skills, and advanced training in experimental design and statistics. Special attention will be given to candidates with a strong background in phonetics and/or automated eyetracking and pupil dilation measures. The position will involve testing infants and/or toddlers, but prior experience doing experimental work with young children is not absolutely necessary.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Human Communication Group in the Psychology Department at the University of Toronto Mississauga (http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/psychology/research-0/human-communication-hc), and will join Dr. Johnson’s NSERC-funded research program on spoken language acquisition (http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/psychology/faculty-staff/johnson-elizabeth). Salary will be $38,000 a year plus basic health care coverage. The successful candidate will develop a unique line of research in collaboration with Dr. Johnson. They will also be expected to work towards a strong publication record and apply for independent funding after the first year. Initial funding will be provided for one year, but renewals for up to two additional years of funding may be possible depending on progress. This position is 100% research and involves no teaching obligations (although general mentorship of students in the lab will be expected). If strongly desired, some opportunities to gain experience teaching may be possible.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, a short statement of interest (<500 words), a sample first-authored publication, and the names of two potential letter writers. Reference letters will only be requested from shortlisted candidates. Application materials should be submitted directly to Dr. Johnson at the application email address below. Review of applications will begin August 15th and continue until the position is filled. The optimal start date would be October 2013. International candidates with strong English skills are encouraged to apply.
