Meeting Description:

The 7th Conference on Language, Discourse, and Cognition (CLDC 2014) will be held from May 3-4 in 2014 and co-hosted by Graduate Institute of Linguistics, Department of Psychology, Neurobiology and Cognitive Science Center at National Taiwan University, and Linguistic Society of Taiwan. 

The CLDC aims to provide a forum for researchers interested in language, discourse, and cognition to discuss new research findings, exchange innovative ideas and share the approaches in these fields. Although CLDC was launched only six years ago, the topics relevant to language, discourse, and cognition as well as the interdisciplinary studies stimulated over the last few years have given rise to a growing body of critical findings, making CLDC an important event in the field of cognitive linguistics in East Asia. We hope that the CLDC 2014 meeting will continue to attract a greater number of international researchers to participate in the dialogue. The 7th Conference on Language, Discourse, and Cognition (CLDC 2014) aims at research in cognitive linguistics and interdisciplinary studies. The meeting will be comprised of a general theme of 'Cognitive Linguistics and Interdisciplinary Studies' and a special theme of 'Body Experience and Language Processing.'

General Theme:

Cognitive Linguistics and Interdisciplinary Studies

The 7th Conference on Language, Discourse, and Cognition (CLDC 2014) provides an international forum that brings together researchers interested in language, discourse and cognition. The special focus of CLDC 2014 sets “Cognitive Linguistics and Interdisciplinary Studies” as the main theme in the hope that we can further explore the various issues bearing on the symbiosis between cognition, language and other disciplines. We would like to invite original abstracts on topics dealing with, but not limited to, the following disciplines or sub-disciplines:

- Cognitive syntax
- Cognitive semantics
- Cognitive pragmatics
- Cognitive sociolinguistics
- Corpus linguistics
- Linguistic typology
- Cognitive linguistics and interdisciplinary studies (psychology, neuroscience, biological science, cognitive science, social science, information science, etc.)

Special Theme: 

Body Experience and Language Processing

The 7th Conference on Language, Discourse, and Cognition (CLDC 2014) features a special theme titled “Body Experience and Language Processing.” Over the past decades, the embodied perspective as well as body sensation and sensory activity has become an increasingly important topic in interdisciplinary studies such as linguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. Sensory stimuli–faces, environmental sounds, visual aids—seem to instantly and effortlessly bring to human body and mind a rich array of knowledge that we experience as the ''meaning'' of those hints. By looking in depth at the interaction of body experience and language, we may gain a better understanding of how human sensations, perceptions, and conceptions are expressed and embedded in different linguistic structures, and also how they function at different cognitive levels, such as verbal communication, body representation, social action, and so forth. The special theme of CLDC 2014 invites abstracts on research related to various aspects of Body Experience and Language Processing, including theoretical and/or applied and interdisciplinary studies. Possible topics include, but are not restricted to, the following:

- Body experience and linguistics studies (phonology, phonetics, cognitive syntax, cognitive semantics, cognitive pragmatics, cognitive sociolinguistics, language acquisition, etc.)
- Body experience, language, and communication
- Body experience, language, and culture
- Body experience, language, and aging
- Language and gesture 
- Language, objects and action
- Language, body experience, and interdisciplinary studies (psychology, neuroscience, biological science, cognitive science, information science, engineering, humanities, etc.)

Important Dates: 

Deadline for submission: December 20, 2013
Notification of acceptance: March 3, 2014
Deadline for early registration: April 7, 2014

Submission Format:

Abstracts must be written in English and a maximum of 500 words in length. (References are included.)

Submissions are limited to one abstract per person, as either single or joint author. Please submit abstracts to one session (either general or special) only. 

In the case of joint authorship, please designate only one corresponding author for communication with CLDC 2014. If not specifically indicated, the first author will by default be the corresponding author.

Please do not include any information in your abstract which may reveal your identity, as the review process will be conducted anonymously.

Submission Guidelines:

CLDC 2014 will accept online submissions only, via EasyChair Conference System. Submissions will not be accepted in hard copy format or by email transmission.

1. Please log in the submission system and complete the form.
2. Please do not include any example or reference in the main text of the abstract. In addition to typing your abstract into the text box, please prepare a PDF file and upload it in the paper column (at the bottom of the form). In the PDF file, you can put special characters or fonts (e.g., IPA) used in the main text of the abstract and supplementary materials (examples, references, etc.). The PDF file should not contain any personal information that may reveal authors’ identities.
3. Please specify at least 3 keywords for your abstract. Also, please identify at least 1 subfield related to your work by checking the subfield(s) from the list provided. If the topic of your abstract belongs to a category not listed, please select “others”.
4. Please click “Abstract Only” to proceed.
5. Shortly after you complete the submission process, an email message confirming receipt of your abstract will be sent to you.
