Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: Phonology
Pragmatics

Description:

The GrEP research group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is pleased to announce a 4-year Ph.D. position associated with the project entitled “Prosody, Gesture, and Linguistic Structure” (FFI2012-31995), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The Group of Prosodic Studies (GrEP) is part of the Unitat de Recerca en Lingüística (UR-Ling), Department of Translation and Language Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a research oriented university located in the centre of Barcelona, with a recognized body of faculty members and international students.

Goals of the Project:

It is well known that a fundamental aspect of successful human communication resides not only in our ability to use structural and lexical patterns, but also prosody and our body and facial gestures. However, little is known about the linguistic mapping between gesture, prosody, and other linguistic structures. The two main goals of the project are; (a) To investigate the contribution of prosody and gesture to linguistic and pragmatic meaning, and specifically to the expression of intentionality and epistemicity and (b) to investigate how children develop the mapping between prosody/gesture properties and epistemic/intentionality understanding. One of the novelties of the proposal lies in its interdisciplinary approach. We use a combination of methods and techniques such as linguistic and prosodic/gestural analysis, as well as comparative (developmental, cross linguistic) and experimental methods such as eye tracking and brain imaging techniques.

Description of the Research Assistantship:

The PhD position is expected to cover the period from January 2014 to January 2018, approximately. The position includes a monthly salary and coverage by the Spanish Social Security, as well as coverage of university fees related to doctoral study. The assistantship also includes the possibility of short term internships in other labs. Annual renewal of the assistantship will depend upon successful progress within the doctoral program and collaboration on the research project.

Profile of the Candidate:
The minimum requirement for applying for the grant is a bachelor’s degree. Holding a MA degree in linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive science or a related field will be an asset. Since the candidate will be expected to carry out his/her PhD project in a theme directly related to the project, thus to have at least some background in experimental linguistics, pragmatics, and prosody, will also be considered an asset. Interested candidates should have a good command of English and at least basic knowledge of both Catalan and Spanish, or be ready to acquire both languages upon arrival.
The grant holder will become part of the GrEP and UR-LING groups at UPF and thus will be expected to actively participate in the research activities programmed by the research group, as well as those programmed by the graduate school. The candidate will be encouraged to develop his or her own line of investigation within the research project and actively lead this line of research.

Application Procedure:

The application for these PhD grants related to research projects will be handled by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in early September (the applications are expected to be open for only 10 days). Students interested in applying please contact Pilar Prieto (pilar.prieto at upf.edu) as soon as possible, and no later than August 30, 2013. Interested candidates should send a complete CV, a sample research paper, and a brief expression of interest.
