Applied Linguistics in Teaching - Teaching Applied Linguistics 

For a considerable time now Applied Linguistics has been making great contributions to teaching and learning processes in the context of various public and institutional domains. At the same time, Applied Linguistics has continued to be taught as an academic discipline in higher education. With the motto 'Applied Linguistics in Teaching - Teaching Applied Linguistics' the GAL Congress 2014 would like to shed light on this field from both perspectives, namely 1) Applied Linguistics as a pillar of academically informed language and communication education and 2) as a subject to be taught and studied in its own right.

Call for Symposia:

We invite you to submit suggestions for symposium sessions relevant to the congress motto. The deadline for submission is October 31, 2013.

Once the accepted symposia have been announced (by November 11, 2013), there will be a separate Call for Papers. The final program of the congress will be announced by April 15, 2014.

Aspects to be explored in individual symposia might include the following: 

- Historical perspectives on linguistic teaching and language instruction 
- Applied Linguistics and information technologies (language corpora, electronic dictionaries and reference guides, Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Computer-Mediated Communication, etc.)
- Lexicogrammar: Challenges and chances for textbooks and dictionaries
- Linguistic and foreign language instruction: Teaching and learning in the age of Web 2.0
- New educational technologies: Problems and potential for schools and universities
- Applied Linguistics in teacher training 
- Intellectual property in the ''Copy & Paste'' era: The problem of plagiarism and possible solutions from the applied linguistic perspective 
- New media and language development 
- Barrier-free communication: An educational objective 
- Talking about linguistics: The imparting of linguistic contents in academic and non-academic contexts 
- Language variation and native speaker usage as challenges to learner language, prescriptivism and target standards
- Early native and foreign language teaching: Issues concerning the university education of pre- and primary school teachers 
- Text Linguistics and language teaching 
- Multilingualism: Challenges and opportunities for language teaching 
- Teaching multilingual communication for professionals

Please submit suggestions for symposium sessions, including the title, abstract (ca. 500 words not including bibliography) and a list of potential presenters, to the GAL head office (geschaeftsstelle at gal-ev.de). The deadline for submission is October 31, 2013. Please include confirmation statements from at least three presenters, expressing their intent to take part in the respective symposium, provided that it is included in the program. 

Congress Format and Procedures:

The GAL Congress allows for two types of conference events: symposia and individual presentations. Symposia provide the opportunity for a more lengthy examination of a central issue concerning the overriding conference topic. A single symposium can be divided into three to five 90-minute time slots (a maximum of 6 hours) and may consist of presentations, discussion panels, workshops or a combination of these, e.g. presentations and data sessions. The only requirement is that each time slot should not exceed 90 minutes, so that the scheduled breaks remain the same for all sessions during the course of the Congress. Within a respective time slot, the division of time is not restricted (e.g. two 45-minute presentations; a 90-minute workshop; a 20-minute impulse presentation and 70-minute discussion; etc.). Panels lend themselves to individual presentations, depending on the amount of submissions. These presentations have a time limit of 45 minutes in total (30-minute presentation and 15-minute discussion). 

Submitting symposium sessions and individual presentations takes place in two steps. Firstly, with this Call for Symposia we are asking for topic suggestions for symposia. Please indicate how much time is needed (three, four or five 90-minute time slots). Please reserve open slots for paper presentations that can be placed in your session (see Call for Papers). 
The program committee will make their decisions based on those suggestions that, in their entirety, provide the best fit for the main topic of this Congress. You will be informed of the decision by November 11, 2013. 

Call for Papers:

The call for papers will follow the announcement of the accepted symposia. When possible, accepted paper presentations will be assigned to individual symposia on the basis of topic. However, there is the possibility of holding a paper presentation outside of the symposium format, as long as it is concerned with the main topic of the Congress. The program committee, in consultation with the symposium directors, will coordinate the allocation of presentations to the respective symposia. Individual panels, which will run parallel to the symposia, will be arranged for presentations that do not thematically fit into a specific symposium session. This will also be the case for those symposia in which the capacities have already been exhausted.

The final program, coordinated by the symposium directors, will be announced by April 15, 2014.
