Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce the Workshop on the Sound Systems of Mexico and Central America, to be held April 4-6 2014 at Yale University.

This workshop will bring together an international group of linguists to discuss the phonetics and phonology of indigenous languages spoken in Mexico and Central America. We hope to facilitate communication between scholars who are already working on these topics, and to encourage further research on the sound systems of the many languages spoken in these countries.

This workshop is supported by the Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Memorial Fund and the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies, under the auspices of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University.

Nos complace anunciar la realización del Taller Sobre los Sistemas de Sonido de México y Centroamérica, que tendrá lugar del 4-6 de abril de 2014 en la Universidad de Yale.

Este taller reunirá a un grupo internacional de lingüistas para tratar temas relacionados con la fonética y fonología de las lenguas indígenas de México y Centroamérica. Se espera facilitar la comunicación entre investigadores que ya trabajan en estos temas, así como promover futuras investigaciones sobre los sistemas de sonido de las muchas lenguas que se hablan en estos países.

Call for Papers:

The Workshop on the Sound Systems of Mexico and Central America will bring together an international group of linguists to discuss the phonetics and phonology of indigenous languages spoken in Mexico and Central America.

We are accepting abstracts for 20 minute presentations. Abstracts are welcome on any topic dealing with the phonetics and/or phonology of an indigenous language from the region. However, preference will be given to talks that offer an analysis or explanation (in any framework) for a particular sound pattern.

Abstracts should be at most 2 pages with 12 point font and 1 inch margins, including examples and references. The deadline to submit abstracts is November 4, 2013. Abstracts may be submitted at http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/SSMCA2014. 

We hope to notify authors about abstract acceptance by late December 2013. If interest is high enough, we may accept additional abstracts for a poster session at the conference.

The languages of the conference are English and Spanish. Abstracts may be submitted in either language.

A small number of scholarships may be available for student participants from outside the U.S., to help offset the cost of travel.

Convocatoria de Presentaciones: 

El Taller Sobre los Sistemas de Sonido de México y Centroamérica reunirá a un grupo internacional de lingüistas para tratar temas relacionados con la fonética y fonología de las lenguas indígenas de México y Centroamérica.

Se aceptan resúmenes para presentaciones de 20 minutos. Será bienvenida cualquier charla que trate sobre la fonética y/o la fonología de una lengua indígena de la región. Se dará preferencia a charlas que ofrezcan un análisis o explicación (desde cualquier marco teórico) a un patrón de sonido concreto.

Los resúmenes deberían ser de 2 páginas con letra de 12 puntos y margines de una pulgada, incluso la bibliografía y los ejemplos. El plazo para presentar resúmenes es el 4 de noviembre de 2013. Los resúmenes se pueden entregar en http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/SSMCA2014.

Esperamos notificar a los autores sobre la aceptación de los resúmenes a finales de diciembre. Si hay bastante interés, es posible que se acepten resúmenes adicionales para una sesión de carteles durante el taller.

El inglés y el español serán los idiomas de trabajo de la conferencia. Se aceptan resúmenes en ambas lenguas.

Existe la posibilidad de que se ofrezca un número limitado de becas para estudiantes que viajen desde otros países, con el objetivo de reducir los gastos de desplazamiento.
