Description:

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCSB invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Spanish Sociolinguistics to begin July 1st, 2014. The ideal candidate should conduct quantitative community-, corpus-, or laboratory-based research. We are especially interested in candidates with research expertise in one or more of the following fields: quantitative sociolinguistics, dialectology/linguistic variation in the Iberian Peninsula and/or the Americas, language contact in the Spanish-speaking world, social aspects of bilingualism, sociophonetics. A secondary interest in minority or indigenous languages of the Americas, and/or Basque would be an asset. Candidates should have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English. Knowledge of Portuguese or Basque is a plus. Evidence of outstanding research (or research potential) and teaching ability at the undergraduate and graduate level are essential. The Department offers a doctoral emphasis in Iberian Linguistics, focusing on topics in Spanish, Portuguese, their varieties and topics in Spain’s regional languages, it collaborates with linguists from UCSB's Linguistics Department (www.linguistics.ucsb.edu), and participates in a cross-departmental Ph.D. Emphasis in Applied Linguistics (http://www.appliedlinguistics.ucsb.edu). Graduate students also participate in the Cognitive Science emphasis (http://www.cogsci.ucsb.edu) and related activities. We seek candidates who can contribute both to our undergraduate and graduate curricula.
