Meeting Description:

The semantics of derivational processes has long been a neglected field in word-formation studies. More recently this topic has attracted considerable attention, but a workable model of word-formation semantics that can meet the empirical challenges posed by the data is still under debate. Some of these challenges are the well-known flexibility or underspecification of affixal meaning, pervasive polysemy and the role of world knowledge in the formation of new derivatives. 

The aim of this workshop is to bring together theoretical and empirical approaches to these (and perhaps other) problems.

The workshop will be sponsored by the Collaborative Research Center 991 ‘The Structure of Representations in Language, Cognition and Science’ funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Accommodation (3 nights) will be provided for all speakers.

Call for Papers:

The organizers welcome contributions on all aspects of derivational semantics, using any kind of data-based and theory-oriented approach, including experimental, corpus-based, quantitative and computational studies.

We invite the submission of abstracts to ingo.plag at uni-duesseldorf.de by January 30, 2014; selection will be made by February 15, 2014, and candidates informed of the outcome immediately thereafter. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (excl. references). Please send two pdf files, one with an abstract including your name(s) and affiliation(s), the other with only the abstract and no names and affiliation(s).
