Focus: Suleyman Demirel University invites you to participate in summer school entitled “Discover Kazakhstan: The Country in the Heart of Eurasia.” This summer school encompasses three components: lectures, Kazakh language classes, and excursions.

Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate

Description:
During the summer school a variety of teaching formats will be used. The sessions will be conducted in the form of classical lectures, workshops, roundtables, field trips and excursions in order to impart and enhance active interaction that will enable participants get to know their fellow students and have fun during their stay at SDU. The young researchers should actively contribute to the program by organizing informal fellow meetings, by presenting their own papers in a “Research Forum”, and by presenting their projects on final “Impressions of Kazakhstan” mini-conference.

Self-organized meetings: The program will include explicitly marked spaces allocated for self-organized meetings for participants. The participants with similar research interests may discuss methodological or theoretical questions, and build more sustainable networks. The summer school organizers will encourage such meetings throughout the event.

Research Forum: Younger researchers are invited to present a paper on desired, current or completed work (approximately 20 minutes), to be discussed by the summer school audience.

“Impressions of Kazakhstan”: All participants should prepare 20-minute presentations, where they share their personal opinion and impressions about Kazakhstan and reflect on the topics studied during the summer school.

Course(s) Offered:
National Character of Kazakhs and its Reflection in the Language, Culture and Communication.
The course is designed for 5 contact hours, 50 minutes each.  The main objective of the course is to give deep          insights into the traditional Kazakh culture and taste it in dynamic lively environment. The participants will have an opportunity to visit Kazakh family and experience profound basics and features of Central Asian hospitality.

Practical Cultural Linguistics.Traditional and Modern Material Culture of Kazakhs and its Reflection in the Language. 
The course is designed for 5 contract hours, 50 minutes each.  The main objective of the course is to help participants build the solid knowledge about Kazakh material culture. The participants will visit the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan, which is one of the oldest and largest museums in Central Asia and the Museum of National Musical Instruments which has more than 40 items of Kazakh instruments.

Ritual Aspect of Kazakh Culture.
The course is designed for 6 contact hours, 50 minutes each. The main objective of the course is to introduce participants with rituals related to the interaction of a man with nature (cosmocentrism); rituals related to the stages of socialization of a man (bessyk toi, tusau kesu, sundet toi, til ashar and etc); rituals related to Kazakhs’ beliefs about other worlds (bata, sadaka toi).

Contemporary Vision of Kazakh History.
The course is designed for 4 contact hours, 50 minutes each. The course aims to acquaint participants with the basic principles of Kazakh history, as well as modern perception of it. The course gives objective historical knowledge about the main stages of the history of Kazakhstan from the ancient era to the present, the continuity and consistency of ethnogenesis, the formation and development of the state of the Kazakh people.

Religion in Modern Kazakh Society.
The course is designed for 2 contact hours, 50 minutes each. The course aim to acquaint participants with the present state of religion in Kazakhstan and people’s attitudes to the religion. The participants will have an opportunity to visit religious sites in Almaty.

Gender in Traditional and Modern Culture of Kazakhs and its Reflection in the Language.
The course is designed for 4 contact hours, 50 minutes each. The main objective of the course is to give insights into the present state of gender policy in the region in comparison with traditional culture. A special meeting will be organized during summer school, where participants will have an opportunity to meet with leading female politicians, financiers, teachers and scholars.

Nomads and Kazakhs: Succession and Changes.
The course is designed for 4 contact hours. The course aims to give information about the ancient nomadic culture of Kazakhs and how the ancient traits are preserved in modern culture.

Kazakh language courses.
There are beginner and elementary level classes offered for students. The course level is determined by the language skills of the individual participant. The course comprises 10 hours per week in groups of 10 participants. The instruction is carried out by the teachers of Kazakh as a Foreign Language Department.

Tuition: 400.00 EUR

Tuition Explanation: The course fee is 400€/person

The course fee includes:  
- 60 hours of classes/lectures (10 days with 6 x 50 minutes of classes),
- workshops, roundtables, thematic field trips,
- course materials,
- the use of the PC-Pools and Wireless LAN at the university and dormitory,
- cultural and leisure program,
- all excursions.
Information about grants will be available at a later period.

Accommodation
Accommodation for participants will be provided in single/double rooms in student dormitory. The price for the whole period of the summer school is 200€, which includes meals at students’ cafeteria.

Registration Instructions:
The participants will be selected based on academic excellence, quality of letter of motivation and a reference letter written by a university professor or a supervisor. Language skills required to participate in the summer school is Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
